I get to have the pleasure of being the big turkey for this Thanksgiving day open trail run at McLean creek! 8)
This will be a Sunday run!!!
Nonmembers, This will count as an officially lead trail run, a requirement for member ship in the CJA.
I do not as of yet have any trails in mind, but will work on it after i get an idea of who will be attending. we are just going to be exploring. ;D
The minimum requirements for this run will be as follows:
- 31" or bigger MT or AT tread, if in doubt PM me ( MUST BE IN GOOD SHAPE if unsure take pics and send to me).
- Proper tow points front and rear, stock tow points, aftermarket or aftermarket bumpers with recovery points.
- Full size spare also in good shape.
- Waivers will have to be signed by any non members present.
- Valid drivers license and insurance for anyone who plans to drive.
- Enough food and water for every person in your vehicle for one day.
- Full tank of gas, filling up in Bragg Creek is a good idea.
- Mechanically sound jeep, please make sure your jeep is trail ready.
Highly recommended stuff:
- CB radio.
- Recovery gear.
- Warm clothes and a change of clothes.
- Full jerry can of gas.
- sway bar disco's. (unless you have no swaybar)
- Tool kit, you never know what might break on the trail. (XJs break lots)
- Piece of pumpkin pie for the trail leader & his minions. ::)

-

Nothing wrong with putting it on it's lid... it means that you took the line that others were afraid to... obviously for good reason. Besides... it adds character.

-
No flip flops, meant to get some, but summer never really showed. Hope you have room for another Jeep on your run. Would like to get out for a club hosted run before winter sets in. Look forward to seeing everyone one again. Been great every time out with CJA.
-
Pook, damn I can't go now as Thanksgiving dinner is on Sunday. Big plans set by grandma with a nice turkey dinner. Sorry.
-
no problem rich, i am sure this is going to be the case with most people. but me and johnny are still going out!

Yarrr I be havin' my welder friend make me some plates for D-ring so I be planning on joining ye folks. I'll let ye know how it goes.
Jason
-
sry cant make it out for this one
-
ok so here is the plan: we will meet at the mclean creek pond right by the store, as the store is closed and we do not want to stand in traffic. there is a little spot to pull off the dirt road that over looks the pond, we can air down and have our drivers/safety meeting there.
meeting time will be 8:30 and try to be on the trail for 9, if we keep this early then some people can bug out early and try to catch a dinner if they want.
as for what trail we are running there is none set, we wil be exploring and go wherever the group decides :).
i have been asked if this is beginner freindly, well... yes and no we dont really know where we are going but we will not be leaving any jeeps behind. if you are not comfortable with an obstacle just let one of the trail leaders know and we can either offer you guidance or a bypass or just a tow through it.
Pook

should be a good time ;D

Well said, Pook.
I should be able to join you on this run provided that I return from Moab on schedule, and I'll be happy to fill in as tail/mid gunner, or to lead a second group if there are a lot of folks there.
-
sweet tood hope to see you there!
-
I am a go! Waiting to hear back from some friends to see if I'll have any passengers.
I'll snap some pictures of my tread to confirm it's okay.
Er....also, I haven't had a chance to fix my CB yet....if anyone has one of those SWR meters, or has any insight on that, some help would be great. I tried the leaving it on channel 19 test...never heard anything....said radio test a few times, but didn't try saying anything about truckers. I can get static if I play with the squelch, so at the very least, something's working.
-
we can make sure your working before we head out sunday!
-
time for new tires kev. if you're questioning it now............ ;)
Break the piggy bank, get a BB and some 33s. gigiddy

I'm only questioning it because of what you said at the meeting >:( :P
That and how much I was sliding around in the mud a couple weeks back (fence fixing), but apparently everyone was having the same problems out there. Slewfoot called it "suggestive steering," as in point in the direction you want to go and pray.
I'm pretty sure that I can survive the winter with the tires I have (in the sense that I won't be wheeling at all, so it'll be all pavement driving), and in the spring I can look into a lift and some tires. Maybe a custom fender lift :D
we can make sure your working before we head out sunday!
Thanks Pook! If someone has some time Friday evening, or maybe Saturday afternoon (although I'm not sure when, we have family coming over for dinner), I should be free to tinker with the CB / Antenna....actually, I'm not even sure if my Antenna is tunable. I'll see what I can find out tonight.

swr doesn't affect reception. i would take it to Dean at the road king and have him look at it. at least then you are able to repair/replace anything bad.

Thanks Al, maybe I can sneak over there tonight if they're open and have him take a look.
I did a quick search online, and the radio I have is the Midland 1001z (http://www.midlandradio.com/CB-Radio.WYQ/1001z).
It was er...."working" on the 101 course. We did testing, and couldn't get it to work right, but then when we hit the trials I tried it out and it was fine.
After the show and shine, Johnny said he could hear me, but I couldn't hear him...after finding the manual online and reading it, I learned that the RF gain should be at max most of the time....and I had it turned down to zero.
I pulled the unit when I pulled all the carpets for vacuuming (previous owner had a dog) and cleaned out everything. I reinstalled it before we went to fix fences in September, and re did the power / ground cables. It turns on, and seems to be fine, but hasn't picked up or sent a signal since.
I'm wondering now, reading on the Stu-Offroad site: "...applying a ground to the antenna will cause infinite SWR and the possibility of a burned out RF power amplifier transistor in your radio."
There's a decent chance my whip antenna may have been pushed into my roof rack front-bar mount at some point (part of which isn't painted), which grounded it, and could have caused damage. :(
-
yes, not good to have a short in the antenna, the radios are all cheap and don't have much protection.
as for RF GAIN. that is debateable. usually all it does is cause a lot of static. for close range wheeling like we do, 1/4 to 1/2 turn is plenty. sometimes i turn it up to hear a poor radio. RF GAIN does nothing for transmitting.
-
I should be able to make it. Lookin forward to trying out the new tires :)
-
I should be coming. Have to check with the wife.
-
I'm in as well

no pirates allowed..............
unless you bring a parrot.........
that we can deep fry.......... and eat.........
we'll see how many show up. i have a few lil' trails i'd like to do so people can frack off whenever they want, or wheel. its all good. should be a fun run.
-
I should be there too, as long as I can get back in time for dinner.

Took it over to Dean.....radio is shot, and it's a cheap one so it's not worth repairing......so.......now what should I upgrade it with? ::)
-
I have the cobra 29 nw wx bt one and like it. It is a beast, but it seems to work very well. I also like the cell phone bluetooth function on it; I seem to use it daily.
-
You should upgrade it with another cheap CB. ;)
-
If you have room for two more jeeps, we are good to go here!

I have an African Grey ;)
And ye could be keelhauled for them words!
-
Hmmm....I winder what would happen if we tied Johnny's hand behind his back and let your parrot have his way with him?
-
As long as Johnny has one hand free, and can reach his mouth.... he will never go hungry.
-

Dean should have a Uniden Pro 520 on the shelf for $99.
-
y'aaaarrrrr
i don't like you'r arrrrrtttttitute............................... time fer ye to walk thee plank!!!
-

Tempting...I do like the small form factor ones. I'm a little worried the antenna that came with the Jeep is what killed it though.
Also I've been reading, and whip antennas aren't healthy on the trails (actually, I was wondering this myself....it bounces around a lot out there), so I'm thinking I'll just redo the entire setup with a firestick, and see if I can find a better place to mount the actual radio.
So...I'll be CB-less for this run, but I'd rather do that than burn out another radio due to a bad antenna setup.
-
fire sticks dont bend and just snap off when they come in contact with an obstacle, we can talk before the run sunday i should be out there early.

Forgive my ignorance, but, point A being the store, is point B the pond you're talking about?
As per this Google Maps Link (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Range+Road+54A&daddr=50.892138,-114.665047&geocode=FcSNCAMduE0q-Q%3B&hl=en&mra=me&mrcr=0&mrsp=1,0&sz=17&sll=50.893025,-114.665594&sspn=0.005705,0.009645&ie=UTF8&ll=50.891834,-114.666452&spn=0.005705,0.009645&t=h&z=17)

That is a good point, but rubbing up against a shrubbery one time, my whip antenna was pushed down and into my drivers side window....don't want to lose an eye from that thing :o
Maybe it just needs remounting elsewhere.

Now you're thinking Kev. Stick with something that flexes. If the antenna isn't going to flex, something else will have to otherwise one thing or the other is going to break. IE the mount.
-
nope wrong pond, just get to the store and you will see us all, its just down the dirt road to the left at the store.
-

I'd suggest one of the Wilson 4 foot "flex" antennas. They're spiral wound, center-loaded fiberglass, and are nice and flexy. I've had mine mounted to my tailgate for two years of trail bashing, and have never had an issue with it. It even stays tuned :)

I second the wilson flexi. I also have it mounted to my tailgate and have been really happy with it.

Yep... bring the grape juice... turkey is between 4:30 and 5:00.

Yaarrr ! I be going to...wait...I'm an adult...this makes me sound like a child or mildly retarded....meh...I'll see you guys out at the pond.
