Title: 89 Manche,..
Post by: JENSSEN on January 03, 2011, 10:38:03 PM
So here is the rusty POS that I found on Kijiji.ca when it was posted in here. I spent a whopping $50.00 to drag this cancerous demon home.

I bought this Jeep as I could justify the $50.00 as I could easily part it and recover the funds,.. now if it comes to life we can fix the rest.

So that being said this Jeep has been stolen, column smashed, been sitting for 3 years in the weeds, $60.00 later in towing the Dump Humper is home.

First things first will this bucket of bolts start and run? A battery went into the old girl,.. figured out the "hot wire" sequence and "click,...grunt" SFA happens,.. is the motor seized? Starter gone,.. I must dig deeper. Now what makes a starter engage but not allow the motor to turn over,..Seized? Well I liberally soak the cylinders with some bolt penetrating oil (why not??) and Eric my Diesel Fitter (deez-will-fit-her) asked me if I have checked the oil,.. seems simple so I did,..9 liters! So out it came and some fresh stuff went in. A fresh battery was installed , and low and behold it cranked over WHOOT! Halfway there,.. I cleaned the old plugs fixed some vacuum leaks and out came the slot blade screw driver key and a few moments later a haze of rusty black smoke reeking of stale fuel plumes from the tail pipe,. The dump humper has now moved a up status level. I changed out the injectors and installed a new column , now it starts no problem at all,.. now to face the next task,.. The Rot

,... I think I need a tetanus shot,..

lets address the drivers door,..

So of course all but one of the Torx door bolts come off so I made an access door on the skin and convinced the door it needed to come off

hung the 97 door only to find out the door catch was in a different spot,.. so off came the pin to test fit

I dig it,.. one piece window, power windows and locks gigidy

So you will notice in the picture the door frame is cracked around the pin so that will have to be addressed,..

Welded ground and the new style catch is test fitted,..

Door adjusted and GM key lock installed to keep it true to form and because I didn't have the key for the new doors

Found some rad rot

Goodbye rusty rocker :)

Now lets play a game,... find the brake adjuster,...

Some parts bouncing around in the brakes,.. no biggie

Driver side rocker before

Both doors are on now,.. working on some electronic repairs,.. beauty interior,.. :shocker:

and finally it starts and runs!

I see. I was hoping you found the holy grail - a company selling replacement cab corners. I would order 10 sets just to have extras. Back to old school building a set corners for the 90 MJ.

Are you going to coat the frame with anything before putting the box back on.

Yes! start loading all the bolts with penetrating oil asap and repeat many times,.. an impact is your friend and maybe call a guy who just pulled one if he is close ;) I plan on coating the whole frame with Rhino liner or POR 15 before I reinstall. If you have any questions you can PM me for a PH #

Keep it original. It is an endangered species
If you are going to do the 97 pulse swap You need to swap the interiors as well. Lat is a lot of work but very nice when done.

Nice work . What gauge metal are you using to replace  it with and what did you use as a break ? And where do you buy the metal at ?
Title: Re: 89 Manche,..
Post by: JENSSEN on January 16, 2011, 01:12:40 PM
Gauge I am not sure of using calipers to measure thickness, I believe the floors are 18 gauge the "spine" is slightly thicker. Metal is cast offs from shops when they are too small for them.

I am using a break and a old rail track and many other home brew metal working tools that I have made :)

The Leper - I love it.   Are you just using a DA for the sanding?
Title: Re: 89 Manche,..
Post by: JENSSEN on March 02, 2011, 10:24:59 AM
DA to knock it down then a finish sander to feather it,.. Brute force first, precision after :)

So I decided to shift gears, and try somthing I have never done,..

The headliner,.. was out with my Wife and we stopped at the fabric store,.. Grabbed some batting and headliner-ish fabric. So I started on stripping the old crap off,..

Hosed on the 3M spray glue and attached the batting

Then I did the same with the fabric

It's not perfect but it looks pretty damn good I think for the $20ish dollars I invested in the experiment :)

Haha, I was dragged to the fabric shop with the wifey too  :P. While exploring fabric land, I came across the vinyl with somewhat of a thin foam underday which was perfect for my CRX project. If you ever decide to go vinyl, you can take the roll and heat it in the oven so it's somewhat malualble (about 150 degrees for half an hour). Then spray the base you're installing it on with 3M spray adhesive. Next you can lay the vinyl over the liner and wrap it around the edges. With this method, you avoid awkward looking corners, spots that aren't stuck properly, and tension in the material that will make the adhesive fail over time  ;)

A very simple solution to stiffen you old liner is to go to Canadian Tire and buy a cheap fiberglass patch repair kit and apply to the back of your old headliner.

A few updates,.. decided to pull the box to clean the frame, prep for the new diffs, pull that stupid brake adjuster, ect, ect

Found some welds that made it by the illustrious AMC Quality control dept,...  :fs1:

Nice perocity,...

Found some interesting undercut and basic lack of weld on the frame rails,... so that had to be fixed,..

Tried the Jackson "NITRO" ADF Welding helmet tonight and let me tell you for a value priced bucket ,... it's DAMN NICE!

I am happier with this :)

Noticed an oddity in the frame rails,.. Silver paint,... very odd and a nice colour

Likely the colour I will end up with on this project,..
