We're having an open run January 29th, heading out to Waiparous.
I want every one lining up behind me so there are plenty of jeeps to push me up any snow laden hills that we may come across. I am running open diffs so this will be gentle.
Requirements:
Ample warm clothing, change of clothing and shoes, and plenty of food and water for everyone in the vehicle.
31" or large MT's in good condition and a full sized spare. Please plan on airing down to 15 psi or lower.
Solid front and rear recovery points.
Signed waivers for any non-CJA members in attendence.
Vehicle in good mechanical condition.
Full tank of fuel.
We recommend a functioning CB (ch 10) or FRS (ch 2)
This run is 100% family friendly, so kids are welcome.
Its winter and there is always a chance of body damage so be warned.
Meet up in the parking lot of Smitty's at Cochrane by 9AM. We leave there at 9:30.

Note: There is a weather advisory for Southern Alberta overnight and on Saturday. -15 to -18 temperatures forecast, with heavy 5 to 10 cm of new snowfall expected or Calgary and surrounding area.
This will change conditions of course. After the previous warm weather you can expect icy conditions with fresh powder on top. It will naturally make the run much more challenging.
It will be even more important that you have additional warm clothes and those things specified in the requirements (top post in this thread) for this run.

Open runs need signed waivers now? or has this always been the case?
I could be in.

Any non-member on a CJA sanctioned run has always required a signed waiver.
-
i might be in if i dont break before then

Oh my bad. Always thought the open ones weren't sanctioned. But anyways I should be in. Looks like I have that weekend of so should be a go!
-
I think he ment that he was headed out and anyone can join him
And if u join him he wants to make sure everyone is safe and has warm clothes and all the good stuff
-
We'll see if i break anything on Sunday the 23. If not I should be able to convince the boss to let me go ;D

It basically says they aren't liable if there's an incident, or that you agree not to be a bad 4x4ing example (drink, litter, drive out in the river etc).
-
Might be able to make this one as well! Will be out on the 23rd it looks like, so as long as the xj survives that one, I dont see why it cant come out again on the saturday :)
-

No worries at all.
Some open runs aren't sanctioned - they're thrown to gether casually. This one happens to be sanctioned - meaning that it's on it's "official" CJA run, it's lead by a CJA member, it's on the CJA calendar, and counts towards the trail runs portion of the CJA membership requirements.
-
Cool well I'll definitely have to try to get out to a few open runs. It looks like there might be a Beyond Waiparous run on the 30th so I might have to go on that one this time. Not that I'm a bad seed or anything.
-
I will be there with signed waiver in hand and everything else in check! Looking forward to it.
-
Ill be there looking forward to it!!!!!!! Hope to meet some of you.
-
So this waiver do you guys bring it out or do i have to pick one up?Can some one let me know.THANK'S
-
we will supply the waivers for nonmemebers to sign at the trail head.
-
I should be able to make this one.
-
My winch came in today, and my winch plate should be here Monday, so I should be able to make this run with new gear to try out too! I'm looking forward to a couple runs with the CJA folks - two weekends in a row sounds like a great introduction to the club. See you there!
-
BAAHHH :(
Wont be able to make it. I work Sat now. Had to swap the shift due to other engagements that I do need to be at. Sorry guys! The weather was great though for the Hot Chocolate run, so if that holds up, it should be another glorious day out in Waip!
-
I sure hope so. a nice warm and wet day would be great!
-
I should be in for this one.
-
Count me in
-
what is the difficulty level on this one planned to be? I might be able to make it, but it would only be my second time out and I wouldn't want you guys to have to take an easier run because of a newbie. I didn't have any issues this past weekend, but I think it was a pretty basic run (?).
-
im there for sure if i can grab a 35" spare by then want to try out the new 350
-
I'm there from Red Neck Deer with a passenger from Saskatchewan.
See everyone at Smitty's.
-
If this is similar to the Hot Chocolate run, I'm in!
I got my own air compressor ordered up, should be here by Thursday, wont have to ask others to borrow theirs anymore :P

Chupacabra - No worries. Everyone helps everyone out. If your thing doesn't come in, relax and come out. We'll take care of things. God knows people did for me. See you there.
-
My Saturday has freed up so I will be there.

Good stuff! It'll be great to see you out again Jim.
-
I wanna come too. But.... only have a 30" spare and running 33's. Anyone going on the run have a extra to use or for sale? 30" is still a full size spare right? lol.

More than likely just like the Hot Chocolate run... depending on how much has melted. You should be good to go, buddy.
-
Cool. I was hoping to have a CB in by saturday but Comtek is closed. I was also hoping to get a compressor in before the weekend but Stan is sold out of those...So if you guys are ok with me using frs and borrowing a compressor to air up then I am in.
-
Go down to Flying J (down south), grab a CB, coax, antenna.... ect. It is all there, but you will have to do the work. All their stuff is on on the wall, except for their CBs, which are in one of the aisles.
That is what I did 3 years ago.
-

So I went down to Flying J and got everything I need (I think) and will get it all install tomorrow night after work. I will just have to try and get it tuned up. Does someone have an SWR meter I could borrow? Is this something that could be done quickly on Saturday morning in the smitty's parking lot or should I try and get it taken care of tomorrow night as well? Sorry for all the questions. :-[
-
I have one you can use. What sort of antenna did you get? If its a steel whip you may need to cut the bottom shorter, or make it longer, if its a firestick or top tunable, theres a little screw I believe. Doesnt take long at all! Im off tomorrow and will be driving around If you need to borrow it your more than welcome to.
-
There wasn't a lot of options there so I just grabbed the 3' firestick, I think it was a trim-to-tune model. That would be sweet, I am way up in the NW though so it might be better if we met up somewhere? Unless you don't mind coming up to Kincora.
-
Im heading out to bowness after about 1pm or so. I dont mind the drive! Isnt that what I bought my jeep for? Let me know what time works for you in the afternoon, and Ill swing by with it. Ill PM you my contact info

Hey Dan,
I have one here at the house too so if you want to pop by and grab it after work tomorrow no problem.
You will need another short piece of coax as well so that you can put the SWR meter in line betwen your radio and antenna.........I have that as well.
Either drop me a PM or hit my cell tomorrow sometime.

It is open as long as you have the requirements listed in the first post you will be fine.
-
Air compressor just arrived! Now to see if I can get it installed after school tomorrow... Dont imagine it will take more than a few hours
-
PM sent.
I think you were in the other group but I have some shots around the campfire and on the way back so.
-
Looking like there will be some fresh snow to plow through. Should be fun.

It should be fun.
I will be bringing 3 extra FRS radios so if you don't have one you can still join in. Come see me at Smitty's if you want to borrow one.
-
I picked up a CB yesterday and I'm going to try and get it installed tonight. I also have 2 FRS radios I was going to bring anyway.
Thanks
-
I got a full size spare today so it looks like I will be in for this run

I will not be able to make this run. Work has interfered yet again.
-
ok Todd, have fun at work and we will miss ya.
-
Update. I was in Calgary today at Modern Motors. The highway back to Red Neck Deer was utter chaos - accidents within sight of other accidents on both sides and both sides stopped for 10-15 miles in spots between Carstairs and Bowden. I fully expect at this hour the QE2 is closed. They've updated Calgary to 25cm expected.
We will review through the evening and early morning. Waiparous doesn't concern me - getting there 2 hours in one piece does, never mind it being driven mostly in the dark.
-
RedDog, that is quite a trip so we will understand totally if you can't make it in. There will be lots more open runs.
-
Just don't take the QE2. The trunk road is fun in the snow, and the area that we wheel in Waiparous is only 40 km south of Mountain Aire lodge on the trunk road.
-
With the forecasted temperatures of -15 to -18 (windchill will feel like -23 to -25) any trail side mechanical repairs and popped beads will be alot more difficult to deal with... Not to be a downer on your run - just something to consider. Back in the day the old CJA used -5 as an acceptable temperature for a run.
-
I am making a quick stop at the Timmy's at MacLeod and Glenmore (right in behind the Esso) for 7:30, if anyone is interested.
No, buy your own coffee.
-
I have to bail as well. Also have to go into work :/
Have fun in the snow!

Thanks and yes we're out. It's gotten just as goofy here coming down like gang busters when we were to be on the northern fringe of the system. The trails would be a hoot but as I indicated last night - we have to get there first.
Next time.
-
I just wanted to say thanks had a great time my wife and kids loved it . I hope everyone made it out and hope to do in again soon with all of you!!!Can some one send me some pic's if they have some that would be great thanks Bryan :)

You are on crack Trevor. Works just fine...
First off... is the little green light on the PC? Is it plugged in...? Can you access the inter-web?

I kick you in the ding-ding!!!
Yeah.... no. Not so much.

I'm not worried. If you can not make the interweb work to look a vid on tubeyou, you won't have much luck finding your ding-ding, never mind mine...

Rob good vid you did a great job VERY NICE!!
-
Nice video! What software did you use to edit that up?
-
On this one, surprisingly iMovie '11, but I swap between Premiere Pro and After Effects (both CS4) on other jobs. This was all shot hand held with a small Lecia LX5 point & shoot camera (1080p)
