Title: Ford Taurus electric fan owners
Post by: Vinman on March 26, 2006, 07:40:09 AM
I was at Princess Auto in Calgary yesterday and they have a bin full of what appears to be brand new two speed Taurus fan motors. There was no price but I imagine they are cheaper than anywhere else. They are located in an aisle near the back of the store along with the other misc. auto electrical junk like wiper motors, fuse boxes etc.

I'm 99% certain they are the exact same as the motor I had on my old setup, it even has the Seimens label on it.

Thanks Vince.

Picked up the last 4. Not sure when I'd gettem for 19$ again so grabbed a few :D .

Only difference is the end plug which will be an easy splice.

Good job Bill, you got 4 for about half of what I paid for 1 new fan.

No kiddin. And since we are switching Denise's over right away, I figured a spare or two at that price wasnt a bad idea.

Got a good place to recommend getting the controller from? I grabbed a shroud and fan out of a taurus at pnp for her tonight.

The controller I sold you came from Mopac, I believe it was about 80 bucks. They also have the same controller with a sensor that fits between the cooling fins of the rad or inserted between the rad hose and rad.

I used a thermostat controller from Mopac that goes inside your rad hose for 35 bucks. Just a cheapy but works fine. One trick I learned is to install the coolant probe in the bottom rad hose. The reason this is better than the top hose is that the fan will only run when is needs to which is hardly ever in my 4 cyl.  If you intall the probe in the top hose then the fan is running more cause that is the temp Leaving the engine (hotter). In the bottom hose the probe is sensing the temp going Into the engine which takes into consideration your speed (airflow) through the rad and how hard your driving at low speed.. hope that makes sence.

My fan never turns on while city and most off road driving. Also I set my fan to come on 10-15 degrees above my actuall 190 degree thermostat so that it is always open and my fan and/or driving speed regulate engine temp. Works great.

The only pain in the A$$ is getting the little tube for the probe to seal in where it goes into the rad hose. They give you a little gromet type thing but it's a pain to install and keep from leaking. Hose clamp needs to be very tight.

It is an easy to find electric fan that pushes a lot of air and fits a Jeep radiator.  I think they are around $20 at picknpull.

Thanks John.  I did a bit of a search and found that they come on 90-95 Taurus', as well as some other Fords.  They are a Mark VIII.  I also found that once again the local Princess Auto doesn't have them, and one of the local salvage yards would charge about $150 for one.  Thats what they call fair market value.  A price that changes daily.  I guess I will have to hit the Princess's in Calgary next time I am up.

The fan took 5 minutes to find (and remove) from pick-n-pull.  $13 plus $3 core.  Only one Princess Auto near Mcnight and Barlow Tr.  You'll need to come to Cowtown.

Thanks John for the pics and the help.  A few final things.   What all do you need for the install.  Just the fan/motor with wiring.  Do you need a connection at the other end, or do you just slice it?  Are Pick-n-Pull the ones that charge to get in the yard?  Next time I am in Calgary I will have to hit both Princess &/or Pick-n-Pull.

So, for $13 + core you get a fan motor.  How much would they charge for the the motor/shroud/fan?

No, no....

The $13 plus $3 is for the WHOLE fan with motor shroud, wires as shown in the top picture from Pick-n-pull.

The motor (lower picture) is a $20 item from Princess auto.  You don't "need" one.  People are just picking them up because they are new and cheap.

Here's a link to the best write up and wiring diagram I've managed to come across.

http://www.tacomaterritory.com/~dickfoster/Pics/Taurus%20Fan%20Wiring.pdf

The pig tail on the PA fans dont match the ford one. You either need to splice it all with quick connects, or grab a for pig tail or two when you are at the wreckers.

In summery, you'll need for the above set up

Pick an pull assembly 17$
Spare motor from PA 20$ optional
Temp sending controller 35$ from mopac
A 3 way switch 20$ mopac
A 50 amp fusible link 15$ auto value
Some wire 10g minimum IMO 20$
A 50 amp relay for high speed 26$ starter relay will work.

So, basically 160 gets you a 2 speed electric, set up with a shut down override, and a spare motor. Maintenance after the inital investment is at most a 26$ relay.

Compared to the 240-280$ clutch fan assembly's that come stock, and blow up on a regular basis, its a pretty good investment.

Another option for controlling the fan is a variable speed controller.

The FK35 which includes all wiring and fuses, $110 USD + $30 shipping instead of the $96 shown above.
