I will be leading the CJA Boxing day Open run on December 26th in Waiparous.
Requirements:
Good AT or MT tires, minimum size 32". Please be prepared to air down to 15psi or less.
Full size spare
Vehicle in good mechanical condition (no leaks)
Proper recovery points (both front and rear)
Warm winter clothing (and footwear)for every person in the vehicle, and extra clothing and footwear.
Extra food and water for everyone in the vehicle
Full tank of gas
CB Radio
Recovery strap
Rear locker or a winch (unless you're putting tire chains on)
Shovel
A good attitude :)
Recommended:
Tire chains (especially for those with 33" or smaller tires)
Axe and/or saw
We'll meet at Smitty's for 8:00 AM, with a full tank of fuel please. You may want to fuel in Calgary, and consider bringing a Jerry can....I don't know what service stations in Cochrane will be open on boxing day.
-
I will be there... Boxing Day shopping is overrated. I'd rather be wheeling :-*

If all goes according to plan, the lift will be done and the new 31" Duratracs will be on in time to make this event. I have a pair of chains but no experience using them. Do ya REALLY think they will be necessary? Could prolly bring them along for the ride ;).
-
Bring them along. If it is crazy icy, you may need them. If you have them with you, you won't need em...

Per the run requirements, if you don't have a rear locker or a winch, please show up having already put your tire chains on in your driveway, so that you know how to do it and you know that they fit. Depending on conditions, we will probably ask you to put them on at the trailhead (since it is part of the run requirements for people that are on tires smaller than 32" and don't have a winch or lockers)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH3rL6tqUj0&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH3rL6tqUj0&feature=related)
This guy demonstrates it well....but if you set up your bungees the way that he did, you will cause sidewall damage to your nice new Duratracs. Make sure that the ends of the hooks point out. Also make sure that have actually have the clearance for tire chains - on the top of your tire, and next to the inside sidewall. You'll need proper chains that are made out of chain (not the Honda Civic cable chains), and those will cost you some clearance around your tire - both on the top and on the inside sidewall. If you don't have enough clearance when you start the run, those chains will adjust your clearance for you.
I'm not saying this to be difficult - I'm saying it so that you're prepared. This run isn't going to be anything too over-the-top....but we'll be going through some areas that ended up causing a bunch of body damage on winter runs last year. I really don't want this open run to end up with us winching a near-stock vehicle through, and the owner of that vehicle realizing at the end of the day that he'll be shelling out a pile of money on repairing body damage.
-
Good advice there Toddooo. ;)
If I get the work dun and make it out for this trip I'll be sure to bring the chainage along. Since I only have 1 pair of chains is it best to put them on front, rear, driver side or passenger side? :D
Does having Trakloc in the rear count as having a locker?
If I drive all the way out there with the chains on will that not wear them out? Think I'll just practice putting them on in the driveway so I can help you guys with your chains too. ;)
Not trying to be difficult or anything....just saying ;D
-
run the chains in the rear, because we are gonna make that Tracloc work.
tracloc? not a locker. there are a few additives you can put in your diff to lock it up solid. i believe one concoction that works well is a handful of bolts (assorted sizes) and a banana peel. something about the potassium and added metal locking that puppy up solid.
and i think he means try em on before you go, so when you get there, you know how to install them, and you know they fit, so he's not waiting for you to put em on.
afterall, you don't wanna be out there too long; gotta get back for boxing day shopping!
-
I think he's saying to know how to install the chains ahead of time so everyone isn't standing in tue cold waiting for others, while they figure it out.
Tracklocks don't really count Rob, they rarely work properly. Lol.
-
What I'm saying is that if you're working on figuring out how to install your chains while the rest of the group is airing down, the rest of the group will be at Four Corners by the time that you realize that we've all left and you take your chains off for the drive back to Cochrane. Based on what I've seen in some of the spots that I want to visit on this run, chains will be an absolute requirement to get your ZJ through. To be honest, even with those chains on, you're still falling short of the requirements that I outlined - you may want to consider picking up or borrowing a second set for your front tires.
And Apeman and Johnny are spot-on....trash-lock is not a locker.
-
me and clay are going to brign the mini zuk it has lockers front and rear and a cool tilting deck

Please check the minimum requirements for this run - it is not going to be suitable for stock vehicles. However, we will have a run on New Year's Day that will be very stocker-friendly. :)
-
I'd like to go just bought another jeep id like to try out haven't been out in awhile
some info on said jeep is beneficial for those putting on the run.
i've heard there is quite a difference in capability between the Rubicon models and the compass models........
-
Jeep rubicon 6" of lift 35" bf Goodrich mud terrain, 9000 pound warn winch, full sized spare, and proper tow points front and rear. I've been out with you guys before just not in awhile and not with this jeep

dang, it woulda been funny to see ya show up in a compass lol. and i'm sure Mr. Squared won't have a problem with ya coming :)
although it would be cooler if it were a compass on 35s ;)
-
It could still be one of them fancy Jeep minivans on 35s.

Angry Trevors are actually quite funny when you wear your shin guards and a cup.

Me have new locker now. Me want to try and not get stuck. Me think Todd will still pull me out though :)
-
I am in for this one.
Happy to lend a hand if needed. I can lead, follow or get out of the way :)
-
Really looking forward to getting out on this one. I have tire chains though, will that be okay Tom :)
-
Tire chains kind of remind of when I had training wheels on my bike when I was a kid
-
Thanks. That makes me feel much better lol
-
I'm not making this run anymore, Jeep won't Cooperate.

Yup that's pretty much the plan....every time something breaks I just burn it and start over, one day on one of my Jeeps I'll get it right and devise the perfect build.....

So here's who we have so far:
W Squared
NuxJr (with chains)
The Evo team in the MiniZuk
WK2008 with a new locker and some chains
Joker
Silverfox (Voluntold as tailgunner :))
-
Yiup I'm still in ;D. Decided to get some new, properly fit chains. When I need to put them on will have to go on the front though...control arms for the rear have not arrived in time :-\. Don't want to put the 'training wheels' on till I really need em ;).
Anyone want some chains that look like they'd fit 33-35" tires?
-
I'm in. Looking forward to breaking in the new OME lift...
-
So I just got off the phone with Fas Gas and they are for sure open for business on boxing day. Great spot to grab some fuel and last minute snacks before you meet up at Smittys. I still remember the husky or Mohawk being open too though I think. See you all in a few days

Ahh hell ok iffun ya say so ;)
-
Be at Smitty's ready to roll at 8 or be there at 8 and roll out 8:30ish?
CB channel 4?
-
We will meet at 8AM, do a quick driver's meeting, and then head up the highway. Please have snacks and fuel purchased and in your Jeep before you arrive at Smitty's.
All of the sun we have been getting is going to make those hills pretty icy, so we'll be asking folks with no lockers to chain up at the trailhead.
-
wont be coming :( spent more on christmas then I was planning and work screwed me over on my check, so i wont be able to afford the gas :(. Was really looking forward to this too.
-
So I will be there but my tire chains will be staying home. My brake lines are way too close for comfort so they will not be going on. It's much harder to put chains on mud tires than all terrains as they get stuck in the lugs.
With my locker and 32s I will be fine aired down to 10 or 11 psi.

calling a limited slip differential a locker is like saying your goodyear GSAs are great mud bogging tires; you can say it, but its not true............... just sayin'
i have a lsd; it is most definitely not a locker...........
have fun tomorrow!!!!!! should be great weather :)
-
Great run guys!
Once again the leaders of this run from CJA did a great job showing us beginners how to wheel safely and respect the environment. I learned a lot from these guys as usual. Even had to use the front tire 'dance' which I learned from you guys to get me out of a situation where I thought I was stuck for sure.
The only down side to this run is when I freaked out when I thought I was lost in the wilderness near the end of the run. Unfortunately, I have a true phobia of getting lost in the wildernesss due to a tragic experience earlier in life. However, the guys I was with did what they needed to do to find me and get me back on track. Thanks guys! Sorry for the drama!
Sincerely,
Jeff

How was the icexon the hills? And did any one use chains ?
-
Great day, great leadership, great group....all good!!!! Hardly spun a tire all day, without wearing chains!! ;D Love Duratracs!!! :D
Thanks to all for a wonderful day in the woods!!!
Going out with a freshly installed kit is always interesting. Have a few 'noises' to chase down this week but worked reasonable well. Front end seemed to bottom out a lot, and even without the weight of a winch on the front. Glad I put the rock rails on too!! :o
-
How was the icexon the hills? And did any one use chains ?
The conditions are very little ice and very little snow, so on most of the hills you could crawl them, on the odd ones were you spun a tire they quickly found rock and got some grab. To be honest they could use a little more snow to add a little more dynamics to the runs.
Having said that it was a great day, beautiful and sunshine......great to get out.
See you all on the first.

Won't be making it after all wifey got sick. Uhhh next time.
