Title: Proper Jack Stand placement under TJ
Post by: FirstTimer on February 15, 2012, 09:16:42 AM
TJs going under the knive this weekend!
I will be removing both axles and was hoping to get a little more info on where to properly place the jack stands under the vehicle.  Because of the size of my garage the intention is to do one axle at a time by removing the front, putting everything back together, rolling the jeep out, turning it around and then removing the back.
Any info will help as I don't feel like getting smushed!!  :-\

If you can only remove one axle at a time then place the stands right after the lower control arm mount on the frame. For the rear, right in front of the lower control arm mount.

To add a sense of more security, throw the tires under the skidplate.

On the frame somewhere, I'd put them behind of the axle ( more towards the middle of the jeep) so I could pull it out from the front of the jeep. But before I took anything out I'd push/shake the jeep as hard as I can to make sure it's steady. If you got a set of 4 put the other 2 up near the front but make them removable.
Be safe under there

I for sure will be putting the spare under the t-case skid plate learned this trick first time I went under.  So there is no need to put stands up at the front of the frame where the bumber attaches?

You don't have to, but you can.

I always leave a jack under the rig somewhere in tension just case. Typically under the bumpers when Im removing axles.

If just doing axle work, I use a redundant set of stands under the axle in addition to the ones under the frame.

I work alone a lot, and I have dropped vehicles before. Luckily never when I was under one.

Anyways, better safe then sorry.
