The Calgary Jeep Association is pleased to announce the 6th annual Off-Road 101 Course
This is a one day, family friendly course that is open to anyone that will introduce participants to the basic skills that are necessary during an Off-Road adventure, as well as safe and environmentally friendly practices while on the trail.
Rough outline of the day:
The course will take place at the Mclean Creek off highway land use area. We will be meeting at the Mclean Creek store from 7:30 am to 8:30 am. At 9am we'll start with introduction to off roading instruction, along with various beginner obstacles to get you acquainted with your jeeps capabilities. Around noon we'll have a short lunch break (you’re responsible to bring your own lunch as well as addition food and drinks the rest of the day). Then we'll head out for a trail ride with CJA members providing instruction and support throughout the way. Please note that this is an offroading activity and there is always the possibility that damage and scratches can occur to any vehicle. The trail guides will do their best to prevent / minimize any potential damage to the vehicles, but the potential is always there.
The number of registrants will be limited to 30
Date: June 01, 2013
Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Please send a PM to: specialk

Hi.
Been waiting for this 101 course a long time. Got my first Jeep, a 1997 Jeep TJ in Oct12 and have been patiently waiting through the winter.
I don't want to miss this opportunity. Basically to ensure a spot I need to be there early the day off the course?
Also, is there a specific decent CB radio that you will recommend?
Can't wait

Devo, just send a PM to Specialk to let him know you would like to go.
It isn't a drop in event.
-
Since there will probably be more questions in the thread regarding this...
For CB Radios Cobra makes a decent brand. However a radio boiled down is only as good as the tuning job on the antenna. Do some research on how to properly ground your antenna and you will find that even an inexpensive radio can give you decent results :) The more expensive you go in radios you will find you get weather channels, a built in SWR meter (which usually arent as reliable as a proper meter) and funky backlight colors.. Save money on the extra features and put that towards your antenna setup. You will be happy you did!

Who's running it this year? My girls gonna be doing the 101 in my Jeep. To keep her sane I'd love to jump in with someone else so she can avoid my "advice", if there's an extra seat available ;)
-
Just let her have the jeep and you stay home :P

Haha, thats funny crap.
Will is a good dood on the trail Kev.
Hmm, if I could convince my GF to take the day off, I should get her to run this in the YJ.

Most HATE me on here, till I wheel with em hehe.
Tell her she won't be the only new girl, that'll be a selling point for sure. This one won't be the same as you met Bill ;)

Hahaha busy guy.

Just in case Kevin didn't get my pm, unfortunately we are out. I didn't get the move done tonight like I hoped :( hopefully there's a next one, girl was real excited about it. I'd still like to donate to the trail fund though since my time seems to be nonexistent these days.
-
Thanks for letting me come. I had so much fun. Thank you so much for all the tips and instructions, they sure did come in handy. I even got a memento to take home. A big stick stuck in my spring and break lines on the front driver side haha. No harm just a hitch hiker.
Good times
-
Thanks for the great day. I had no idea a stock TJ could do what mine did today.
-
Thanks for the good time and lessons! Will definitely be out for some more runs!
-
Thank you for an awesome day and for towing me out when needed!
-
Great day. Nice weather, friendly people, TONS of Jeeps, and a silly silly amount of smiles all day long.
A big "Thanks" to Kevin and the CJA guys for putting this on.
-
Thanks to everyone that attended, it was a great day and good to see everyone had a good time (well, maybe not the flying squirrel LOL)
-
Had a great time and would definitely recommend this for anyone who's new to their Jeep or who has never really taken it off the street.
I learned lots, christened my recovery strap, had some great finger artwork drawn on the rear windows and was amazed at what my 18 year old YJ could still do.
Thanks everyone for the fun, the words of wisdom and the help! ;D
-
I'm jealous of all you guys who made it to the 101. I was (and currently still am) stuck at work in beautiful Nothern Alberta :( . Where can one see some pictures of the event?
-
hey Vinman...that squirrel said it was the most fun flight of its life! ;D The tree, however, was thankful the rest of you went around it.
Thanks CJA for a really awesome day!! Now I am off to buy a new bumper...and front fender.
-
Thanks Kevin for taking the time to head up 2013 Jeep 101
Excellent presentation. Hit the trail at 12 noon and off the trail at 4:03.
You said we would be off the trail by 4. Missed it by 3 minutes..........??
How did you do that? And......thanks to all the CJA member who took
the time to come out and work with everyone and making it a great day.
-
Had a lot of fun yesterday. Thanks to all who showed up!!!!

Thank you Kevin and the rest of the team at the CJA for a well organized event. It was so much fun!
What would you suggest if we want to do some more trips with you guys? Just the next step type of thing and no rock climbing! :)

Check the "Open Runs" section of the forum. Many people will post up there before they go on a run.
As mentioned at the 101, wheel with people you feel comfortable with and don't be afraid to ask questions about the planned trail and what the organizers recommend for equipment.
-
Yup. What Fraser said...
Keep you eye out on the Open Runs section. Or post up in there that you looking to do a run on a specific day. Let people know your experience level and the type of rig you have. Get a map of the area and even a GPS (helps track were you have been and where to go). And then get out there and try stuff.
Our trail guy will try to organize a CJA sanctioned run this summer.
The trails out in McLean have names for the most part and you will have noticed numbered markers as well. We started on Sylvester for example.
I would recommend trying what we call Top of the World (Actually Priddis East I believe).
Get some recovery equipment and get out there!
-
I had a good time. Wheeling with beginners is pretty fun, you get reminded of how much fun the simple stuff can be. And you always pick up a few new tips. I'm glad everyone had fun and came out in one piece.
I'll be back for next years 101 to help out.
I hope to see a lot of you guys and gals out on the trails this summer :)
-
will you be doing more than 1 of these courses, i just found out about your club and missed the course

The official 101 is only done once a year, but if you watch for some of the open runs, they are generally very newbie friendly.
Just let whoever is leading the run know that you are new and they will make sure you are getting direction.
