Okay, after those 3 long line pulls on our last run, my $500 winch has suffered catastrophic failure. I KNOW... I'm shocked too ;)
- bent spool
- broken case mount
- now starts to smoke from the gearbox just trying to spool out the cable
- not to mentioned the fubar'd cable...
Obviously now looking for some opinions on what to look at for the best winch for the best buy? ;) - some only list motor HP rating
- some only list motor amperage draw under full load
- whats the HP/Amperage conversion?
- what's a good gear ratio to consider?
- do you need to consider all 3 specs?
-
I would take a new or used Warn 9,000 - 9,500 lb over a lot of the other brands.
-
You can never go wrong with a Warn winch. You may have noticed that the guys that had no problems winching used Warn winches.
Yes they cost more. But in 20 Years you will still be using the same winch. I bought my first XD9000 11 years ago. And I bought another one for my other jeep used from an old guy gat had it for about 10 years and it works perfectly fine for me.
For your jeep an 8000-9500 would be fine. Anything over that is overkill.

I run a Zeon I have had other brands and other warn but I'm most happy with this one. But I would always recommend a warn over the other brands

I bought my 9.5ti used, and ran it through some hard wheeling. After all that time....it needs a couple solenoids. I took it off because I want to rebuild it so that I can run it for another decade.
I'd buy a good 9000 or 9500 pound Warn, slap a synthetic line on it with a safety thimble or hook, and call 'er good.
-
Warn M8000 on the old MJ. 15 years old and been through four synthetic lines and still going strong. Pretty impressive.
-
Xenon here too. Ran a 9000 for a few years but running a 12,000 now.

I think a used warn is the way to go!
I am currently running a gen2 9500 Shittybilt, since I could not find a used Warn at a reasonable price point back when I was looking.
I did do my research when I decided on my current set up. I like the line speed, water resistance and good reviews. If it lasts I will be super happy, but..... who knows I have done a few pulls with no drama but not enough use tell if its any good. It seems like a well thought out winch, time will tell if its well assembled.
I had a Kijiji M8000 I killed but it took years of abuse, being submerged in mud/water, countless hard long pulls etc. I would have just replaced the motor but I felt like trying something different.
Plus the motor alone for the M8000 cost mostly as much as my (nearly new) synthetic line XRC 9500 from kijiji...Is that a redflag? maybe lol but I like trying different equipment out as long as there is promise it can perform. I will just rebuild my M8000 when it fails.

A big thanks to everyone for your thoughts and opinions! 8)
Went through A LOT of research and comparisons back n forth... even once I'd decided on a WARN.
There was nothing worth while out there used, so it came down to a choice between a Gen1 VR8000-S for $730 or a WARN VR 10 (Gen2) for $770.
I ended up ordering the VR 10 for the extra $40.

That winch will probably outlast your Jeep. ;)
-
That’s da plan ;D
-
Where'd you find it for 770? You talking USD or CAD?
-
Amazon.ca
Where else? 😉
Actually prices seem to fluctuate daily on that site so you’ve got to check back regularly and be prepared strike when the iron is hot. To get that pricing I had to opt to wait 6 to 8 weeks until they ordered more in.
I see the price has now jumped up by $100...

VR10 is $724 at northridge - same one i bought 6 months ago for $803 - seems pretty good for the couple times i used it.

Mounting plate??.......Drill mounting holes, weld old holes closed, etc.
-
4.5”x10” seems to be a fairly common/popular mounting spec. Even matches my old CPE POS.
As far as I can tell it should be the same as your XRC... of course it depends on which Warn winch you’re considering. They don’t all mount the same.
-
Ah perfect thanks guys!
> Mounting plate??.......Drill mounting holes, weld old holes closed, etc.
I should have been able to figure that out...

That's one nice deal.

Matt! Next time give me a call and I'm sure I could at least match that price, if not beat it.
See if I ever loan you my tire chains again!
Pffft!

Sorry Dave!
Total brain-lapse on my part. 😞
BA is on my list of vendors going forward... as it should be!
