Title: XJ/ZJ/TJ Steering options?
Post by: cLAY on October 04, 2020, 09:45:01 AM
What are you guys running for aftermarket steering? I've got a 4" lift on my ZJ(short arms with drop brackets) and installed the Rugged Ridge T steering setup almost a year ago. Within a week it developed a horrible dead space so I installed the washers on the TREs which mostly fixed it. However over the summer its has slowly gotten worse and is now annoying to drive. Lots of play and bump steer.

What else are people running for kits? Its mostly a winter driver, only do a few trails a year. Not wanting to do Heims.

The Currie steering kit is about the best, I think Synergy has a kit as well.

On my old MJ I have a combo of Currie with a "beta" version of Savvy tie rod end and a PSE assist.  Have mucked around with it welding and strengthening mounting points etc.  Has performed flawless for 10+ years.  Prime example of  "you get what you pay for".

On my TJ full PSE hydro with links and TMR lifetime heims.  So far, so good.

So TMR, PSE, Currie, Savvy...all top notch high quality stuff but expensive.

Good to see that you and the family are still hitting the trails!

Thanks guys! I checked the front end today and the linkages seem to be good. Looks like it might be the steering box. The bigger tires and 300,000kms have probably pushed it to the edge. I have adjusted it once already about a year ago so I'm hesitant to do it again.

I don't need a HD box or anything, the steering effort is fine the way it is. Any suggestions on good quality rebuilds/replacements?

Clay, im not sure if it fits on a ZJ but there's always the option of a Durango box. I think it's the 99 V8 4wd box but please double check... there are good write ups on NAXJA site
