You may have seen it for sale, it's been up for awhile.
I thought it was a completely dead engine, but it ran with a horrible knocking noise that got worse and worse until it was parked.
So it may be salvageable, may need a swap.

Part Out? 8) :P 8)
Good to see you with a Jeep again. Is it a 4.0 or 4.7?
-
At this point no I'm not going to part it out, I'm going to get it going and wheel it.
It's the v8 4.7, developed a knock that got worse, and worse, and was parked. Haven't had a chance to get into it/drop the pan...

Keep us posted. Haven't had a good repair/build thread in a long time.

Nice!

I’ve been watching that one for a while. The parts list is pretty good. Good platform to build off. Some low gears in the diffs and it will go anywhere.
Do some research, those 4.7 engines are fairly yeAr specific I think.

Nice project Rob! 8)

I know the guy from the Packrats that had that Jeep, that thing smoked a lot last time I saw it on a trail. Been out with it on trails a few times. It needs lockers bad or you won't get to many places. From what I understand, those engines are hard to find that aren't beat to their last breath. If it was easy to find a replacement it would have been swapped.
I thought about buying it too lol but I have too many... for now

Yeah I went into this eyes open, as opposed to some of my jeep purchases in the past.
Every ~day~ hour my plan changes.
Here's my plan, and I'll post updates as it goes...
Get Jeep into Quonset (need like 2 weeks to finish some projects I have going for firewood processing/collection)
Drop the oil pan, and inspect the crank/bearings. Once I know what the crank looks like I'll make the call on Full LS/4L60E Swap or keep digging into the rebuild option.
As for the the smoking on the trail, the valve stem seals are terrible on these 4.7 v8 motors. Unfortunately as it stands there's no good engine for these available. I could buy a working Grand Cherokee though but they're ~6k and if I'm spending that I might as well do a full LS swap, or 4.7 Reman with a 3yr warranty.

Sounds like a good plan. You might want to toss in a rear locker while you're at it. That thing gets places because it has power but a nearly stock TJ can out-wheel it.
It went from non-smoking and running pretty good to smoking and running like arse in about a year :D

Let’s tear into this thing on Monday….. and Happy Birthday!!

How's the engine?

Any updates? Interesting thread :)

Sadly nothing yet! Some projects got in the way and I hurt my back again.
That said I'm 2 hours from pulling(Pushing) the Jeep into the shop and will be able to start digging into it.
