Update

The funding is in place for this project.

I have submitted the application to ASRD for the Temporary Field Access Permit for the project and should have a hard copy of the TFA next week. We have some prefabrication and logistic work too accomplish before the install date but should be in good shape for the major build and install on the 26th and 27th. I plan on camping in the Ghost FLUZ on that weekend.  It looks like a go on the scheduled date.

On the 26th we will need to split the volenters up in to a few groups with different tasks.

First, small group to assist with the bridge abutments. It is important to limit this group in size when the heavy equipment will operating of the safety of the volunteers.

Second, A group with trucks and OHV trailers will need to move the decking material to the site on the trails from its storage location.

Third, a group will need to assemble the steel bridge components at a safe distance from were the abutments are being built.

If the day goes well we hope to have the steel structure siting on the bridge abutments at the end of the day.

On the 27th

This day we hope to complete the installation of the steel structure on the abutments and build the deck on the bridge, remove the old damaged bridge from the creek , complete some fencing work to divert traffic onto the new bridge and regrade a hillside were we will be getting material for the abutments. The project goals also include some bio enginering work too stabilize and rebuild sections of the creek bank. Some of the Bio enginering project and what items we don't get finished will get planed for the second project weekend in August.

The more volunteers we get for this type of project the more fun they are. I plan on camping in the area that weekend so please plan on bondfires and good food in the evening if you decide to come out and camp as well.

More details to come in the next few weeks as we get closer.

Thanks,
Blair

Blair,

It seems that at least some of us have heavy equip experience.  To second what HeadHunter said, those working with and near the equipment should have the proper safety gear and probably some experience around that type of equip.

Im going to assume that everyone will be required to have steel toed boots, hi vis vest, safety glasses and gloves for the work?

Yes, That is why we will limit who is exposed to the equipment.  The owner and operator of the equipment is very clear that needed to be done. By separating work areas we can better control what volenters are exposed to the equipment and make sure they have the appropriated safety equipment and knowledge. I will look in to the vests ands see if we can get some lent to use for the project. Thanks they are a good idea.

The first order of business,  is who is helping to move lumber this  Saturday, July 5th ?  It has been suggested that we meet at 11:00 at the ASRD yard to load a trailer that Peter Strab has volentered to bring out. Approximately 5-8 volenters would be best. We will load the trailer take the trailer out to the Ghost FLUZ storage area and unload we will be done by 2-3. We can carpool for the run out to save fuel. I need some pepole to step up and commit to come out for a few hours.

Thanks to the group on Saturday. We got over 75% of the lumber moved.

The bridge install will be on the 26th and 27th. We need lots of help on that weekend. Many of us will be camping out in the Ghost FLUZ for the weekend.  If you can only make it for one of the two days that is also a big help.

Please start to post up who will  be out to help.

Thanks,
Blair

Hey Blair!!

Looks like my son & I will be having a father/son weekend the 26 & 27.  Guess what he wants to do.  Okay if we come out to see if we can lend a hand?  Of course I'll have to keep a close eye on him but should still be able to contribute something to the project.  The KJ has a hitch so can pull around a small trailer.  Have basic hand tools...shovel, pick, sledge hammer, come-along, winch, rubber boots, fork/spoon etc.

Sounds Good. Glad you can come out to help.

We will just find a spot for you to help away from the heavy equipment.

Thanks,
Blair

New to the entire province of Alberta. Where exactly is Meadow Creek?  ::)
I'd be interested in lending a hand/meeting some new people.  Nothing like a weekend of manual labour, camping and a few pops by a fire.  8)

The meeting place for the Meadow Creek bridge project is 9:00 AM on Saturday the 26th at the Ghost Forest Landuse Zone air strip.   Same meeting time and location on Sunday the 27th.

http://www.abprojects.org/

For thouse that don't know the area the Ghost FLUZ is located north west of Calgary.
To find it:
Start from Cochrane.
G0 west on Hwy 1A  (not Hwy 1).
Take Hwy 40 (also known as the Forestry Trunk Road) north past the comunities of Bench Lands and Waiparous.
When the pavement ends you are getting near the start of the Ghost FLUZ.
Continue north into the Ghost FLUZ. The Airstrip is located on the west (left side) of the road several KM into the FLUZ.

Below I have included  links to maps on the ASRD website.

http://www.srd.gov.ab.ca/fieldoffices/southernrockies/ghostwaiparous/pdf/Ghost_InfoGettingThere.pdf

Workning on a project like this is a great way to get to know some of the members of the CJA but also other members of the OHV comunity that will be out to help, including members from the local  quad  group, bike groups and other 4x4 clubs. Thanks for your interest in the project.

Update as of July 17 2:00 PM.

Part of the work we had planed for that weekend is going to be pushed back to the second bridge building date in August. We just learned that the steel would not be available to do the planed prefab work on it this weekend so the steel structure will not be ready. We will still be moving forward with construction of the abutments and much of the dirt work on the 26th. We may be done what we can after the 26th and will not be able to move forward until the steel parts are fabricated and transported. Sorry for the change of plans and partial delay. I will post up again once I have had a chance to confer with some of the others involved regarding the delay on materials.

The project is still moving forward but at a slower opace due to the delay on the steel we requier for the project.

Thanks for your interest and I will get more details out once we have made adjustments to the plans.

Thanks,
Blair

Out of curiousity, I noticed somewhere that you folks got feild passes to work on this bridge. Am I mistaken, is this trail closed due to the bridge being out of commission? To me it would also look like the Waiparous Valley trail (road) is still closed due to the wash out from 2 years ago and ASRD not completing their end of things by finishing the work on the by pass you folks built over many weekends last year?

Meadow Creek trail is not closed. The trail passes Dom and I have are to be used for a different project as part a trail survey team, we took two days of training to be part of.

The roomer is that the ministry of transportation has been out to work on the road bypass in the last few weeks. It is a public road and ASRD have requested the ministy of transport to complete the work. One of the members of the Quad Squad that worked on the project was going to have a look this week but I have not heard back. If anyone is going out this weekend please let me know what you have found.

Thanks,
Blair

True enough... Is there a place in mind where people can meet before the project?

If anyone is in need of a ride out to the project I will have room for one with myself, my son & our dog.  If someone decides to ride with us we will be planning to be back in Calgary before dark...just so ya know.  We are planning to leave SE Calgary about 8:00 am.

Blair...anything I can offer to help get out there?

What channel on the squacky box?

Approximately 1-2 KM north east of the intersection of Meadow Creek Trail and Lost Knife Trail on the Meadow Creek portion of the trail. An older log bridge has fallen in on one end. The bridge will replace that one. If you know where the hill is on Meadow Creek trail with the three of four shoots everyone likes to play on? It's just west of that.

If you follow the link to the map below the bridge site is located between points 89& 93 on the map.
http://www.srd.gov.ab.ca/fieldoffices/southernrockies/ghostwaiparous/pdf/Panel_B2.pdf

The goal this weekend is to build the abutments on Saturday. The steel structure of the bridge and the deck will be installed in August. We have had a delay on getting the steel structure ready.

How did the bridge build go on Sunday??  Did the abutments get finished.  When I left on Saturaday it looked like alot of work still remained to be done.
