Transmission fluid....

So the manual for my 03 tj is pretty vague about the specs for this fluid.  Is anyone using something other that the stuff right from dodge?  Also what are you putting in T-case's?

What tranny and t-case?  I know the 231 t-case uses ATF.

Yeah, and the net is not much better!  I have an '03 Sahara, and here is what I discovered:
1.  You can *NOT* use ATF!
2.  I tried the Lucas stuff (with an extra Lucas "No Foam" gear oil additive) and it was a disaster - and a LOT of foaming I might add!
3.  I swallowed my pride and when to a Dodge dealership and bought the Mopar fluid.  I have not had any problems (or regrets) since.

I should add that I had a shop originally change the fluid (which I provided) and they put in the ATF (I was having my Chrysler T&C done at the same time - hence the available ATF fluid).  My 2nd gear started grinding (badly).  Then I swapped it out for the Lucas stuff, but second gear was still grinding and I started to get some fluid leak.  When I went to swap  in the Mopar fluid (myself this time), I discovered that the Lucas was foaming so bad, it was coming out the vent hole on the top of the tranny!

I have not done t-cases yet, but I am thinking Mopar again.

That was my experience.  I hope that helps!

T-case should be atf4 to be exact, can get it from canadian tire.  Although I used the mopar stuff.

I believe royal purple makes stuff that will work in the man. trans.
This is not 'Nam, this is wheeling.  There are rules.

YJ t-cases are ATF 3.

The AX-5 is standard gear oil 75 or 80w90.  I would DEFINITELY recommend synthetic gear oil.  I am currently running Redline in my AX-15.

I have an AX5 and two weeks ago I put in Royal Purple from NAPA at 1275 per liter .
The transmission has never shifted better.  No grinding going into second gear anymore. I would  recommend it.
