Replacing transfercase chain in NP231
« on: October 29, 2008, 09:02:12 PM »
My transfercase chain is skipping teeth and i can get it to jump when all the wheels are jacked up and i turn a front wheel back and forth by hand (in 4wd with engine off)

Can I split the case while its in the jeep if i take the yokes off?

Yes you can replace the chain while it is still in the vehicle.  Some people even do SYE kits without removing the t-case

I changed chain and sprockets in my 242 in my GC while it was in the jeep.  Make sure you change the  sprockets also.  Putting it back together can be tricky as in the 242 the front d/shaft sprocket was on one half while the upper sprocket was on the other half.  If you hold your tongue right and swear a lot it will go back together.
