ax5 into a 97TJ that had an auto tranny
« on: December 17, 2008, 03:37:03 PM »
so i have a friend who has a friend with a 97 TJ she says its a 4cyl with the automatic tranny, and the tranny crapped out.  I have a chance to pick it up real cheap.  just wondering about the work involved in swapping in a 5 speed, can it be done, difficulty, etc etc.
thanks guys

it can be done ... but one guy in a garage will be an eternity of hell. 2 guys & a hoist, a couple hours. You'll need to do research and maybe get an adapter kit from Advanced Adapters.

But on a 4 cyl....... it'd be better to just swap the whole drivetrain. from something else, like a full size.

thats what i was thinking. i didn't think it'd be an easy feat.  I was thinking of swapping in a 4L/tranny combo (with the help of a friend)

i guess one area i'm curious about would be the clutch linkages and setting them up. easy? hard? pain in the bum?  other things to look out for?

Everything should a direct swap over.  However, a couple places to pay attention to would be the input shaft of the t-case to make sure they are the same.  4 banger has 21 spline input and I am not sure if the length changes for the auto vs manual.  The other thing would be length of the tranny because it would affect the driveshaft lengths.  The skid plate should already be drilled for the manual.

I hope you have a complete jeep for parts.  Ie the Clutch pedal, Slave cylinder and a dozen other things you will need.  Starts out cheap but the finished product is gonna  cost more than rebuilding the Auto if you are not careful.  New clutch, throw out bearing, flywheel, shift linkages and a lot of brackets.  Might be cheaper to part it out and buy one with a standard
Good Luck
