TFI Upgrade, now no idle
« on: January 31, 2009, 10:37:06 PM »
I just completed a TFI upgrade (dist. cap, wires and coil) and now my jeep does not want to idle. Before the upgrade it idled great. It runs great but won't idle. I turned up the idle screw but it had no effect until the screw was turned in most of the way and then it revs at 2000 rpm. My setup is as follows:
89 YJ 258
MC2100 carb
Nutter Bypass
TFI upgrade.

I'm wondering if its a timing or plug gap issue (I put new plugs in but didn't set the gap to 0.045 - I forgot)

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I presume that you have checked the timing?

Did you make sure you got the firing order correct? If one pair of wires gets crossed they don't like to idle either.

I haven't checked the timing yet as it idled and ran good prior to the upgrade and adjusting the timing is little out of my realm (but I'm willing to try to figure how to adjust it).  I double checked the plug wires and the firing order is correct.  It starts and runs great throughout the rpm range - it just won't idle.  As soon as I let off on the gas the revs drop to zero.  Thanks.
