Anybody in calgary do bodywork?
« on: March 18, 2009, 03:55:14 AM »
Hey guys, my jeep needs some bodywork - rocker panel areas are rusting out, as well as a big spot on the RF fender.  Im looked for a guy that can do a fairly cheap and quick job of fabbing up some replacement panels and welding them in for me.  I just need something done roughly that I can grind down and bondo the seam and then spray bomb.  Please PM me if you guys know anyone, or are willing to do something like this.

Cheers.
Duncan

Honestly duncan, you would be better off just bolting some aftermarket rocker gaurds on there.

Cheaper, simply, and it looks good.

By the time you get a body man to put new sheet in there, you will have bought a few sets of rockers. Rust repair isnt cheap from any bodyman, unless he's a crack head, or just does terrible work.

Yes, but just throwing rocker gaurds on there only helps for a few years, and only cosmetically.  Soon it will rust up past those, and the the floorboards.  I dont care about aesthetics, but functionality is important.

Bnine, would covering the rust affected are is POR15 and then installing the aftermarket armor help in preventing more rust?

Rust is rust. You can slow it, but without compelte sheet metal replacement you cant eliminate the progression of the rust.  One of my best freinds is a bodyman. He will be the first to tell, buy another tub. Because the money you paid him to do all the rust repair will pay for the new tub.

I've seen a lot of rusty jeeps, and I've never seen a YJ with rotten rockers that didnt have rust on the floor.

To functionally replace all the sheet metal that is likely rusted out in that thing, you are looking at a very hefty bill.

Cover it until you decide down the road you want to do a resto project, at which point you spend the 2500$ on a completely new tub. The 400$ you spent on cockers gets re used and put on your new tub. The 3000-5000$ you spent in rust repair would end up in the scrap yard.

By the way, the rockers will last longer then the rest of the jeep. You havnt a hope in hell of rotting out new, coated, 3/16's plate before the rest of that jeep tub completely disintergrates.

Good luck

If you do, just be carefull to tack it very cold, and let the tacks cool as you go. Sheet metal is really easy to warp when you weld to it.
