XJ Front Drive Shaft
« on: May 25, 2009, 10:07:47 AM »
so I was under my Jeep yesterday doing some cleaning and lubing. and I noticed my front driveshaft is crazy loose. the middle slip joint has like almost a 1 cm of slop in it.

so my questions is do I rebuild it? or is that possible.

or where is the best place to get a driveshaft. My jeep has a 7.5" lift so I need to make sure the new Shaft I get is the right length and is strong enough to handle the 35" tires I have on it.

thanks in advance guys. I haven't done much with driveshafts tho I understand it. more need to get pointed in the right direction for where to start researching so I can do it myself.

i just had both mine done on my 92 xj at "pats drive line (the gear center)" it cost me $450 but they cleaned blasted and painted plus ballanced and a full rebuild. it was expensive but i did not want to cheep out on them.

from what I have seen that sounds cheap! I will give them a call and see what I can do. Thanks Pookapotamus

Make sure you tell them the problem is in the slip joint. Most rebuilds don't include replacing the slip joint.

Did you get a replacement shaft when you put the lift in? 1cm of play sounds like not very much spline to slider contact.
+another for DSI as well

yah its still the stock front drive shaft which suprises me. but it works for now. might look into getting a spare till this one blows up. then look at getting something a little stronger.
