When did rear D44 become standard?
« on: August 02, 2009, 05:42:25 PM »
Hi,

I was just wondering what year did Jeep TJ's Sport start to have the Dana 44 as a standard rear axle?
Or was the D44 just an extra option?

With the exception of the Rubicon's the D44 was never standard on the TJ's.

Not aftermarket, just not standard.  Lots of TJ's came with an optional Dana 44 rear, but the Dana 35 rear was standard.  Rubicons are the only one that the front and rear were a standard 44.  I believe LJ's also had a standard rear 44.  You could get TJ's as old as 97' with an optional 44, but they were alot more rare.  They got more common as time went on.

Yeah, what Jeff said...

FWIW, the 97 TJ's with the optional D44 rear also had 3.55 gears instead of the 3.73's found in the 98 and later TJ Sports and Saharas.
The 04-06 Unlimiteds (LJ) did come with the D44 rear (3.73 ratio) as the standard rear axle and both the TJ and LJ Rubicons came with D44 F&R with 4.10's.
