Removing JK doors
« on: August 24, 2009, 06:16:51 PM »
I've got some friends with a 4 door JK and they have been trying to remove the doors.  The instructions say to remove the nut and the swing the door back and forth while lifting? ???

What other tricks can they try?  Bottle jack under the door?  Would some penetrating oil be helpful?

Thanks

Yup the jack under the door is your friend.  Place some wood and fabric under the door so you do not damage it.  Use some emery cloth on the hinge pins after you remove the doors.  You may also have to ream the bushings on the door to clean them up as well.  Not sure about lube on the pins, the bushings look to be of a phenolic type and may swell with the lubricant?  Patience is your friend when removing the doors for the first time.  Good luck it is worth the effort.    ;D

make sure that you are lifting them up straight! a little on a angle and its so hard to do, same as putting them on.

My driver's side door was almost impossible to remove the FIRST time.  Is easy now.  The hinges are probably a little on the dry side (but WD40 won't help at this stage) or a little missaligned like mine WERE.

I used a highlift jack, on pavement, with the jeep in 4LO with the brake on, with the help of two other guys.  We practically lifted one side of the jeep off the ground before it started to budge - and then it still took some encouraging to get off.  We backed the hinge off when there was only about 1/2" of pin in the hinge and we had to work it like crazy!

About every other time I have the doors off now I lubricate them with lithium.  Now I can remove both by myself.  Just not fun carrying them up four flights of stairs to put them away.  [Anybody live around Market Mall that has a garage/shed with door space...?  Could pay yearly access with beer shaped money.... just saying.]
