Any Avatar .gif not working...

Everytime I try to put a .gif on, it never works!
I add the right URL and when I click somwhere else on the screen, my "preview box" shows it properly, but when I hit "ok" to save changes, it just shows a picture... *sigh* Any help?

that gif is 800KB in size, much too large for an avatar.  also the forum has limits on file dimensions and that one too big for an avatar.
