4.0 WJ clicking from underneath....Transfer Case?
« on: November 12, 2009, 06:19:32 AM »
My 04 WJ 4.0 is making noise from underneath. I've been looking into it and I think it might be the transfer case(247). Heard about a stretched chain. I'm out of town and need to get back home. If this is the case, is it something that will explode or will changing the TC fluid be alright for the short term? If I need a new TC anyways, I might as well find a 242, but I need to get back to Alberta first. Thanks

Just out of curiosity why would you jump right to t-case?

Have you checked all the u-joints?  Lots of times ticking can be cause by a u-joint on its way out.  If that's the case I'd definitely get it fixed before I drove it too far.  Having a drive shaft let go at 100km/h will scare the hell out of ya and is no fun at all.

Found that the noise wasnt from the engine or tranny. Checked U joints, CV's, dif's. All seem to be good. Searched all last night and I keep coming back to the 247 chain, although I hope not. Changing the TC fluid, and go from there.
