Axle Shaft Leakage
« on: November 16, 2009, 08:19:51 AM »
I recently bought a 95 YJ and yesterday I noticed some oil on my garage floor.  Looking under the vehicle, I noticed that he axle shafts seem to both be quite saturated with oil.  Is this just a seal problem?  How much should I worry about this and how much will it cost?  Thanks.

I'd definately worry about this one dude. Your axle seals are shot and need to be replaced. You may have wear/pitting on the shaft as well; where the seal rides on. Get it fixed! Your brakes are probably coated with gear oil, and this well affect  your ability to stop well. You  will  also have less fluid in your diff. and this will cause your Ring and Pinion to heat up from less lubrication.

It's bad if you have a leak here. Oil is getting out and dirt/water/contaminents can get in.

Check to see if the diff vent hose is plugged cause if it is it will cause the seals to leak as well.

Where was the oil coming from? Front axles or rear? Either will leak by wheels but rear axle seals will soak the brakes with gear lube. Seen tubes seep where they are pressed into center section.

Thanks everybody.  Will check on that.  The leakage seems to be at the rear.
