Uh-Oh No 4wd

Hey Guys,

So last night I went to shift my TJ into 4-hi, and no dice.  The lever was tough to move at all.  I definatly have a build up of snow and ice underneath.  Is it frozen up/packed off with snow, or is it all effed up?

I'd bet on the ice buildup.

I've seen frozen mud keep a transfer case linkage from working properly, so an ice buildup could probably do it too.

Very commen with any jeep that sits outside in the snow (exspecaily the vacume engauging ones). If one want to force it into 4x4 hi your best chance is to, pop your truck in netrual (not Moving) and pull your lever in 4x4 low and it should engauge, your truck will want to crawl forward instanly even with breaks full on (love jeeps), now when you push your leaver into 4x4 hi you should be good to go.  Works 75% of the time.  Other wise your rig just needs some time to warm up or you have a significant vacume leak.

I think it is ice.  I cant even move the transfer case lever.  I need to take it to a heated parkade for about 10 hrs...

Hmm.. another thing to design... a waterproof ruggedized infrared heating unit for heating and thawing under vehicles....  a guy on ROF in Winnipeg was saying his auto trans is terrible until he's up to full heat... engine is fine and we were trying to come up with ways to heat it at his work in the parking lot.

Block heater tapped into the tranny pan?

What would be the cat's meow for that would be a garage with in-floor heat as it would be radiant to where the problem area is. Sorry, mine doesn't even have heat yet!

I've got in floor, its great, especailly when under a car laying on your back. Also great as you said for defrosting a vehicle, no slush left on the floor, just dry dirt.

I was able to get under there and dig out the ice today..and the 4wd is working good now.  Thanks for all the input!
