Tranny poping out of Reverse
« on: January 09, 2010, 05:03:10 PM »
I was driving my dads LJ today and I go to back out of the parking stall and the tranny kept poping out of gear as soon as I started to engage the clutch.  The only way that it stayed in gear was if I firmly held it there.  I talked to my dad about and he said it is a relatively new issue.  Any ideas what could be causing this?

It is an '05 LJ with the 6 speed and 3.5" RE SF lift kit installed with a t-case drop.

Thanks

bad synchro??

I know bagged out mustangs often had a 3rd gear that you had to hold into place, or it would just pop out..

This is common with body lifts and/or t-case drops. The shifter is so close to the edge of the opening in the floor of the body that when the body flexs it can pop out of gear. Pull off the boot and see how close it is to the edge of the opening when in Reverse. Grind or cut as necessary.

Thanks for the info, I kind of though it might be because of that.  Also it is a LJ so I probably just could remove the t-case drop and it will be fine

Definitely get rid of the t-case drop. I ran a 3.5" lift on mine without it and had no issues. The extra wheel base helps lower the driveline angle.

hey scott, did national do the lift? i think i was still with them when your dads jeep was lifted. the shifter may just need a tweek of so, but removeing the t/case drop would help.
