Loosing antifreeze!
« on: December 04, 2005, 11:42:01 PM »
Alright, i'm having an issue with my Comanche.

2 weeks ago, my rad dumped almost my entire volume of antifreeze on my driveway.  I filled it back up with 2 bottles of Bars, and it worked fine... until today.  Today, it did the same thing, except in a parking lot.  So my question is, is there anything I can do myself to check or fix this problem semi-permenatly? Is anyone on here able to? Is there a place you guys recommend?  I want to convert the cooling system to the 92+ system from a cherokee so I don't really want to put alot of money into it.

Thanks,
Kyle

throw a couple cans of ground pepper in your rad. If yer lucky they will patch the leaks. I've never done it myself but I have heard it works like a charm.

Change your water pump.  I had a similar problem on a Cherokee, wouldn't leak while running, turn it off and it would crap antifreez all over the ground.
There is a little plug in the back that starts to leak before the pump completely disintigrates, so it kind of warns you when to change it.  Bars leak or whatever its called is an extremely "temporary" repair.

ps. problems with a Comanche, no way, never heard of it before!!!

A good temp fix

WARNING!!!!!!    THIS IS ONLY A TEMP FIX AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AS A PERMANENT WAY TO FILL A LEAK!!!!!

Crack an egg or two into your rad.  As the egg cooks, it plugs some holes.  Again it is only a temp fix.  Anything you use to fill the hole (pepper, egg, etc) will need to be flushed out of the system when you finally get the rad properly fixed.

Update:

I've put together some data, let me know if you still think it's water pump.
If i park front higher than back, the fluid on the ground is brown.
If i park front lower than back, the fluid is green.
My radiator fins are rusty, so I think the leak is right inside the rad and when i park up, the fluid mixes with the rust and comes out brown.  Let me know, thanks.

Thought i'd update this.

It was the water pump.  It became very obvious last week.  But before i could change the pump, i blew a heater hose and the truck became immobile until saturday.  Since I had no time to do the pump before the hockey game yesterday, i left it until today.  So it's in now, not leaking, but another problem came up.

I left the truck running in the shop to make sure everything was working.  I noticed that the thermostat housing was pissing out fluid.  This led to a pressure backup and almost blew up the pressure bottle.  I'm thinking that the thermostat is stuck shut, am i right? Is there anything else than can cause this?

thanks

I'm dealing with the exact same problem, i think its my water pump too. Started friday... is pissing antifreeze like crazy when parked. Sound like metal on metal, im positive its the water pump. Where'd you get yours? I'd like to do it cheap as possible.
