Glass mount CB Antenna?
« on: January 12, 2010, 04:13:36 PM »
Has anybody used a glass-thru antenna for their CB radio here?
Here are a few examples;

http://www.durhamradio.com/astatic-cb27wx-glass-mount-cb-weather-antenna-ontario-canada.html

They seem easy enough to install, but what I really want to know is do they provide a reasonable range?

The reason I was looking into them is I picked up a handheld Cobra CB and what I am finding is the range is pretty limited; ideally to improve it I want to install an external mount antenna of some kind that I could hook my handheld into whenever I am in the vehicle.

it will be better than nothing.  i install them for higher power two way radios and they work fairly well... even surprise me.

i worry about the low power of the cb though, not only for transmitting but receiving.  it will be better but i wouldn't expect it to add any more than double the range tx and rx.

A magnet mount would probably work better and be more versatile.

A glass mount would need to be mounted on the back window, anything mounted on a sidewidow would eventually get torn off by brush.

Thanks for the replies,

That is a good point about the versatility, it would be nice to position it for better reception or take it with me when I need to. I may end up getting a portable antenna just for those reasons alone.

Although I am still leaning towards something more permanent for the truck such as the window mount or maybe a larger external whip antenna mounted somewhere else.

As far as window mounting goes, all the side windows on my truck roll down so it pretty much forces me to mount it on the rear window.

I guess the big concern I have is I would attach this thing to the window with adhesive only to find out it didn't help at all and then be stuck with it there.

i ran one on my old ZJ.  couldn't hear a thing unless they were right in front of you............  i'd rather go with a big ole' 9ft whip

So is the range a tuning issue?
