low buck low range dana 20
« on: March 09, 2010, 08:32:20 PM »
heres a low buck idea i did to my cj-5 a few years ago that worked out awesome. combined with a t-18a and 4.10's, i ended up with a crawl ratio of 64:1. dana 20's stock have a ratio of 2.03:1, marginal at best. the older dana 18 was 2.46:1. much better. the only thing is the d18 is missing the rear center out put, and there for is missing a gear to fully swap them into your d20. in comes the early bromco dana 20. from the outside it looks different from a jeep d20, and on the inside it shares more with the d18, namely the ratio. so what you need is the rear slider from one of these cases to make the whole thing work in a jeep d20.

now i wasent able to find a used d18 with the right gears, but i was able to buy a brand new set from national for around a couple hundred if i rember right, far cry from the $1100 for a 3.15:1 kit for a d20. i had a buddy with the bronco gear, allthough i am sure that one could be sourced as well. i never did do a write up on it but here is a link to the exact source i used to do mine.

neato! you dont get this sort of tech info around here much cause 95% of the jeeps that visit this site  have an np231.  there was all sorts of cool swaps you could do on the older t/cases. not to mention the 4 speed trannies that were offered back in the day. 7:1 fist gear sounds nice:)

ive seen a few people run this with a dana300. the problem was getting the right dummy shaft that runs inbetween the two. had to have a machine shop put one together.
again, very cool idea.

I'm thinking of doing the Dana 20 "Bronco/18 low gear build" myself.  Thanks for another link of info on it to add to the pile.  :)

hey dunl, i say do it, you will love the rusults. hps4evr, that is a 231 doubler to a d300 in that pic. for the right person, that would be a very cheap doubler to build, even if you have to get a custom shaft made. there are a few places selling the whole kit, and i am pretty sure one could just by the parts needed seperatly. mad rooster comes to mind as does the fox-box of of island 4x4.
