Rear Disc Brake Dragging slightly
« on: May 02, 2010, 08:08:54 PM »
HI,

I have an '06 Rubicon unlimited with 4 wheel disc brakes.

One rear brake (passenger side) is dragging slightly.  First noticed while airing-down...the rim was hot.

The pads are dragging (it is not the parking brake...had it apart....the parking brake drum was rusty, and obviously not dragging, used a temp gun on the disk and drum after driving a bit...the disc was hotter).

Both pads are worn equally, and roughly twice as worn as the driver side's pads.  I took the caliper off...visual inspection...nothing was obviously wrong.  Cleaned all sliding points of contact with sand paper to ensure they're smooth, and then greased them.  Sprayed brake clean on pads.  Removed caliper slide bushings, inspected inside of the slide boots and sprayed them with brake clean, lightly greased the slide bushings and reinserted.  Both seemed to slide OK (no hangups or catching).  Reassembled. greasing the caliper mounting bolts.

The dragging/heating problem still exists, and may have gotten worse.  Is there anything else I should check before replacing the caliper?

Oh, and the service manual says to tighten the caliper mounting bolts to 11 foot-pounds...that doesn't seem very tight...does 11 foot-pounds sound right?

Darren.

Sounds like the caliper.  When you change them I'd highly recommend you flush the fluid out too.
This is not 'Nam, this is wheeling.  There are rules.

I chenged the caliper and flushed the brake fluid.  So far, it seems to have fixed the problem, but I'll be keeping an eye on it for a while.

Thans everyone for your advice.
