oscillating t-case output shaft.

Hey guys... anyone ever get the chance to watch your t-case output shaft rotate with out a drive shaft when hoisted?

Was doing a hack & tap, and cutting the shaft with it idling in reverse to get a nice cut. And found mine oscillates a little as it rotates... however, there seems to be NO play in the shaft when pulled around.

Common? or some issue with my t-case maybe?

That's called runout. You should put a dial indicator on it and find out how much runout there is.

Then look up the maximum allowed runout for a 231 tailshaft according to factory specs.

it's a late model NP242, but from talking to Modern, there should be ZERO movement. Mine is probably 1/4" without even measuring it. Grrr....

While ZERO certainly isnt correct, a 1/4 inch is way to much.

Is this 242 equipped with a magnetic speedo pick up, or a regular gear type?
