OK!!  So when we were out at McLean for the clean up I got water in the Trnsmision.  I am guessing it was when my wife (on my encouragement) went thru the big puddle (lake) at the gravel pit.  I did not notice anything wrong at that point.  Did not notice any problems at all till i got stuck in a bit of mud. (sorry johnny ) Once I got pulled out of that I could not get it to come out of 4low.  After a bit of playing with the shifter it did come out, but would not go into Drive or Over Drive.  I only had and still only have 1st and 2nd gears.  It shifts normally from 1st to 2nd, both automatically, and with the shifter, but won't go into drive??!!  That is when I checked and found the water in the tranny.  Got most of the way home, and started getting a funny howl from the front end.  *sigh*  

I have drained and cleaned (flushed) the transmision, pulled the pan and replaced the filter.  Nice and shiney now!!  I also cleaned out the front diff, as it was ugly .  So new tranny filter, and flushed and new fluid, and new gear oil in the front dif.

Nothing has changed with the problems though.  Any ideas please.......  other than a new Transmision

who flushed the transmission?

the tranny might hold around 18 litres of fluid.  you can probably access 4 or 5 litres without a machine to do a real flush.

I did the flush.  Used up 5 gallon pail (almost) so 18 liters I guess.  It came out nice and clean at the end, and when I took it for a run and checked after it was still all shiny

And you drove home from McLean in 2nd gear? At highway speeds?

Is it an XJ?

If it is test the tranny by pulling the fuse below the glove box on the passenger side;  red 10 amp fuse you pull it and manually shift the auto, this will allow you to determine if the tranny is still good. If it shifts without the fuse in you have an electrical issue. There are procedures for testing the solenoids from the harness connector bulkhead located on the passenger side engine firewall.

Did you pull the pan and change the filter? There are solenoids in the valve body that control OD, possibly one(or more) of them is pooched. Might need to take it to a tranny shop if you aren't comfortable pulling a valve body.

any recomendations as to a good Tranny shop?  Cheap is good, but I would rather have something I can trust and rely on than the absolute cheapest price if you know what I mean...

Dominion Automatic on 58th and Macleod. Have it towed there.

I had a similar problem when I purchased my XJ (AW4 auto tranny). Found a similar jeep at Pick N Pull, yanked out the solenoids from the tranny (3 of them at $4 each), installed them into mine along with new filter, gasket, and fluid, and hey presto! Fully working tranny!
