Tcase rebuild
« on: June 07, 2010, 08:45:16 PM »
Ok.. by show of hands, who's good a rebuilding 242 tcase!

I now have three
1) has a wobbling output shaft (bearing maybe) - the root of all my nasty vibrations
2) blown up gear selection, was originally jammed, then freed and seemed ok, until I put power to it, now sounds like a can full of marbles with no power to output shaft.
3) and finally one with what I presume is sheared pins on the planetary diff. 4wd in forward motion, and only 2wd in reverse.

Currently I'm running #3, and will be fine for my DD needs.
I would like to build on good tcase out of the three, but I'm trying to decide if I really want to tackle it myself, or pay to get it done right.

Hands up!

Its really actually quite easy, I have done seveal tear them apart and make one out of 2. I would personally hit PYP grab one for $75.00 swap it in and rebuild yours on your own time and learn as you go.

I'm running one that good enough for DD, and I'll have two (my original, and the blow gear selector one) -- may as well put in new bearings and chain while I have it open.

I have also done several, 231's 242's and a stuuborn 249...and like jens said they are quite easy to work with...Im sure i can find you a FSM on the tcase if you feel like fumbling your way through one of the broken cases.who knows, you may just tackle the rebuild yourself.
Getting grumpier every day.
