TJ hitch and trailer wiring install
« on: June 09, 2010, 05:07:56 PM »
I've ordered a 2" receiver hitch for my tj, and I was told its a huge pain to install, can anyone elaborate on this? Also, where do I tie in the wiring for trailer lights?

What are you going to tow? Do you need 7 pin of 4 pin?

I had mine installed in 15 minuites.  Just bolts up to two of the bumper bolts and two other bolts with handle nuts that tie into the frame.    I had to remove my rear tow hook also.
As far as the wiring. Just get a wiring kit with the T-connectors.  This is only a 4-pin though.  I got mine at Greggs for 27 bucks.  But you can get them at the Hitch shop for twice the price.  The wires are up under the plastic splash guards behind the rear tires.  Pretty simple to do, just unplug your tailight connectors and install the T-connectors.  Then drill in a ground wire.  Takes about 15 minutes.

Picked up the wiring with the t connector, and it seems easy enough, now if this rain would let up! As for the hitch, I'm picking it up tomorrow, however I was told I have to remove some bolts from the gas tank to install it... Anyone had to do this?

I don't believe so.  Should just bolt to the outer frame.   And you can access all the bolts from existing holes in the frame.
