Cam Position Sensor Timing
« on: August 12, 2010, 04:51:32 PM »
Hey guys, does anyone have one of the computers you connect to the diagnostic port (not the OBD one, it needs to be the Chrysler / Jeep one that allows two way connections), to time the cam position sensor properly?

I'm installing the new one tonight, assuming the weather's somewhat okay, and it should be "close" if I mark it all correctly and install it to the proper position, but I would really like to time it properly.

Thanks!

For what they charge you might as well buy your own!

Haha, well, I read somewhere the device is something like $2-$3k, so....I'd much rather put that money towards other parts.

I picked up the Dorman part (which unfortunately has an improperly drilled alignment hole), which was $82.  Versus the cheapest I found the Mopar part from Chrysler was $401 up here in Canada.  So I figured I'd be ahead even if I had to pay a dealership to re-time the cam sensor.

Thankfully though, I followed this thread, and the Jeep started no problem, and sounds like it's running great:

I built my alignment tool out of plastic (cut up an old phone card, and glued the pieces together), and had no issues.

Bonus: had to pull the old spark plugs to make it easy to turn the crank to align the tone ring, so I gapped and installed the new ones at the same time.  Another "routine maintenance" item ticked off on the list....almost done!
