ZJ 4l tranny slip? jerk
« on: October 09, 2010, 02:43:13 PM »
its a 93.  4l i think its a 42re tranny. runs decent enough for what  i paid.  coming home from langdon in overdrive and/or 3rd gear i can feel it hesitate/slip/jerk slightly. there is no decrease in speed or anything like that; just feels jerky jumpy.  also, when i get out of jeep finally home, it smells like burning. and theres bubbles on the tranny dip stick. i'm pretty sure the tranny's fried (was sure when i drove it)  just want confirmation.

also, if someone has an AW4 kicking around that'd be swell too

Direct-drive snap ring failure is pretty common on those IIRC (which causes 3rd gear slip), as well the trans cooler check valve can get plugged and thus cause serious overheating issues (assuming you  have a factory trans cooler). Either way, an AW4 should swap in with a little work, especially since you've got an OBD1. Make sure you get the AW4 TCM along with the trans.

I take it this means you're back in the ZJ game?

Good to have another guy back on the ZJ team, although I think Fraser's got the only one that actually works correctly at the moment. :D

No leather ZJ's at PnP as of yesterday, just a lone '95 5.2 Laredo with cloth.

You might want to try adjusting the transmission bands, the procedure should be in the FSM. No idea if that'll fix your issue, but it's free to try.

That's cause Fraser's is a stocker.... never to see a trail.
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.

Sometimes. There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason as to which 4.0L ZJ's got the AW4 in '93, but some did. It may have only been the early '93s.

mine doesn't. its got the 42re.  pulled the pan and there were a few metal shavings on the magnet though;  it wasn't a crazy amount. but definitely noticeable.......
