Dashes
« on: February 23, 2011, 05:19:41 PM »
I'm trying to find a dash (cluster) for my friends 03 TJ Rubicon and all the wreckers keep asking me if it has rear fog lights. I can't even google rear fog lights on TJ/Wrangler.

It shows up with two part numbers:
Cluster, LHD, KPH, rr fog lamps
or
Cluster, LHD, KPH, w/o rr fog lamps

WTF over?

They might be thinking rr fog lamps are rear fog lamps. Just an Idea

Yes, thank you, I caught on to that bit.

My questions are a) how come I have never seen factory rear fog lights, and can't even find any mention of them on the interwebs and b) what the heck else could it be?

The RR likely doesn't mean rear - more likely the type of lights. Maybe Rugged Ridge??

The difference is probably just the light bulb in the cluster to tell you the fog lights are on.

Perhaps your driving a Range Rover and not a Jeep ;)
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

Can't be an aftermarket part changing a stock part number.

I could see the fog/no fog light indicator in the dash (for the front lights) but where's the RR coming front? Also even on my non factory foglight jeep I still have the indicator. Cheaper to have one version of dash instead of two.

Well according to Tower rr DOES mean rear fog lamps, however the guy I spoke to has never seen one with that option either. Interestingly enough when I run the VIN for the 03 rubi that came with factory front lights, it shows up under the w/o rr Fog Lamps.

Now if rr Fog Lamps never were around in Canada how come I've found a whole whack of dashes with that part number in Canadian wreckers?

The mystery continues!

My buddy bought a left hand drive Jeep from a guy that bought it in Europe when he was stationed with the UN and had it shipped to Canada.
It did have rear fog fog lights, they were small Red utility lamps

FROM WIKI

Rear fog lamps

In Europe and other countries adhering to ECE Regulation 48, vehicles must be equipped with one or two bright red "rear fog lamps" (or "fog taillamps"), which serve as high-intensity rear position lamps to be energised by the driver in conditions of poor visibility to enhance vehicle conspicuity from the rear. The allowable range of intensity for a rear fog lamp is 150 to 300 candelas,[15] which is within the range of a U.S. stop lamp.[5] For this reason, some European vehicles imported to the United States have their rear fog lamps wired as stop lamps, since their European-specification stop lamps may not be sufficiently intense to comply with U.S. regulations, and in North America rear fog lamps are not required equipment. However, they are permitted, and are found almost exclusively on European-brand vehicles in North America — Audi, Jaguar, Mercedes, MINI, Land Rover, Porsche, Saab and Volvo provide functional rear fog lights on their North American models. The final generation Oldsmobile Aurora also had dual rear fog lights installed in the rear bumper as standard equipment.
Most jurisdictions permit rear fog lamps to be installed either singly or in pairs. If a single rear fog is fitted, most jurisdictions require it to be located at or to the driver's side of the vehicle's centreline — whichever side is the prevailing driver's side in the country in which the vehicle is registered.[15] This is to maximise the sight line of following drivers to the rear fog lamp. In many cases, a single reversing lamp is mounted on the passenger side of the vehicle, positionally symmetrical with the rear fog. If two rear fog lamps are fitted, they must be symmetrical with respect to the vehicle's centreline.[15] Proponents of twin rear fog lamps say two lamps provide vehicle distance information not available from a single lamp. Proponents of the single rear fog lamp say dual rear fog lamps closely mimic the appearance of illuminated stop lamps (which are mandatorily installed in pairs), reducing the conspicuity of the stop lamps' message when the rear fogs are activated. To provide some safeguard against rear fog lamps being confused with stop lamps, ECE R48 requires a separation of at least 10 cm between the closest illuminated edges of any stop lamp and any rear fog lamp.[15]

I figured it may have something to do with the "fog lamps (red bulb)" required in europe, but what's throwing me for a loop is the majority of dashes I've located in Canada are listed as w/ rr Fog Lamps, which can't be possible as it was never an option here. Best I can figure out is wreckers are seeing that the jeep had the factory front option and listing the dash as w/ rr Fog Lamps.

Ordered one out of Ontario that claims it has the rear fog, friends jeep is listed as without (pulled the VIN) and apparently the two are not interchangable. If it works we'll know they are just listing them wrong.

Oh and since this is the first one I've ever seen, I'll share the only picture I've ever seen of a rear fog light on a TJ.
