Need tips on pulling a 4.0 head
« on: January 23, 2011, 05:28:00 PM »
So I'm doing a head gasket on a 1997 4.0 Grand Cherokee for a friend. For those that have done one before do you pull the head with the manifolds and then unbolt them or disconnect them and then pull the head, leaving the exhaust maniflods in the vehicle? The exhaust manifold is cracked as well so its going to have to come out. Thanks!

I found it a lot easier to pull the intake manifold and exhaust first. I took both completely out since I was painting the intake, and switching to a stainless header. I had some pics and info in a build up thread last winter...if you need any info it should be there,or pm me.
Getting grumpier every day.

Just finished getting the head off. Ended up pulling it with the manifolds on. Wasn't bad at all. Bit of a dance to twist it in the right direction to get the exhaust collector to clear the driver's side motor mount. Tough and hard on the back alone but with an extra hand or shop hoist it would probably be a breeze.

This guy wants it done as cheap as possible but I think the head is going to need refinishing. With a straight edge across the head I can slip a 15 thou feeler guage under it in the middle. Anyone know what the spec is?

Thanks guys!

I seem to remember an ad on kijiji just awhile back with a guy selling rebuilt heads for various engines including the 4.0 for $50 a head, might want to look into that.

Thanks guys, called Cetus this morning and they are all out of 4.0s for that special. I half wonder if its a gimmick to get people to call them.

They quoted me $110 to get it resurfaced so I'll probably go that route.
