Trans cooler

My rad is toast so I  am replacing my radiator tomorrow . I have a Trans cooler when i removed it from my rad it was caked with mud behind which isn't a good thing, is mounting it to the rad the best option?Also about mounting, Is the direction of the cooler important ? meaning horizontal or vertical?

If you go to an aftermarket rad they have the cooler built in. If you haven't got the rad yet, or bought it new and can still take it back that may be a good option (probably the same price too).

I've always mounted my auto transmission coolers in front of my rad with the supplied hardware horizontally as per B&M, Hayden, and Perma-Cooler instructions. Do a better job of cleaning it with a pressure washer so it doesn't get too dirty/muddy. Make sure you don't spray too close to damage the fins on the cooler.

Take a peek at cabs or police cruisers(vehicles that run all day); they have their coolers mounted in front of the rad.

I'm a fan of the B&M coolers over the cheap tube and fin style because they take the errant rock abuse better.
