Won't stay running... stumped.
« on: May 24, 2011, 08:24:14 PM »
Hey guys... I'm stumped.
I drove my XJ yesterday and it was fine.
Tonight I went to go see a friend and it won't stay running. I have to keep pressure on the gas or it shuts off.
Fluids are all fine. I just changed the oil before driving to BC so there is maybe 1100 km on that oil change.
Plugs were all replaced 2 months ago.
Replaced the fuel pump in January.
Not showing any codes.

It stays running if I keep pressure on the peddle, but shuts off if I ease up on the throttle.

Any idea's where to start looking?

Fuel filter would be a good bet it's cheap to replace and you can go from there.

Fuel Filter and pump were replaced as one unit.

I'm thinking my TPS. Do you know how to test it?

I don't know how to test a tps but somebody on here or google probably knows how I would Pull It and hit it with carb cleaner and clean it up really good.

I would check all your vacuum lines as well. I used to have that problem and had to get a new set of hoses from the stealership. You running a 4L?

It's not completely sorted now as it turns out... when I'm running at mid RPM's doing 60 to 80 ish... it runs a little rough.
I'm thinking when I put it all back together I might have the adjustment a little off. Gonna try to find the specs to see how far it's supposed to be pushed in.

Got some carb cleaner and cleaned out the intake so that might help (it was pretty black under the butterfly)... but it still sounds a little... off. Tuneup is in order, checked the plugs and they are a little brown with a bit of deposits on them. (they are only 2 - 3 months old)  I'm still learning but that's the fun of it. I refuse to take it into a shop so google and youtube are fast becoming good friends. :)
