Tire dilemma with Toyo 13.5

So, another tire thread.

I'm making the jump up to 35's and I know Toyo's are the unofficial tire of choice with the CJA. My only issue with the weight of a 13.5 wide tire. Anyone have any issues with the 35, 13.5 R15 Toyo MT''s? Would they be harder on wheel bearings or axle shafts? I've heard they were great for everything, but they're a really heavy tire. I have a high pinion dana 30 on the front locked, would I need to upgrade to chromoly shafts with this tire?

I'm currently running 33, 12.5 Mickey Thompson MTZ's. I love them for everything but ice. They were downright dangerous on icy Calgary roads in the winter. I don't drive a whole lot, so I can't justify buying a set of Duratracs for just winter use.

The other options I was looking into:
Trxus MT's: I heard these were really hard to balance.
KM2's: Not the best in the mud.
MTR's: I just saw them perform really well in the mud.

Go with the MTR if weight is a major concern.

I do love my Toyos in the summer....but I drive enough to justify Duratracs for the winter, and those Toyos really are quite heavy. Any 35 will be harder on your axle than a smaller tire, but the Toyos will exaggerate that a little bit. Probably not as much as one of the square Interco products would though  ;D
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

So why the need to go to 35's?

I run the 35x13.5x15" Toyo's and can vouch for their wieght. They are fuggin heavy tires. Hope you think this through before making a purchase. Are your brakes stock? They will be woefully inadequate to stop the mass of this tire(on steel rim?) Are you going to have the power and gearing to move all this tire? Expect to do more maintenance in regards to ball joints, axleshaft u-joints, and unit bearings .

Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent tire but be willing to do a lot of maintenance . My back hurts from just rotating these suckers every 3 months.

I agree with Bill though , get the MTR's with Kevlar if you are moving up to a 35. I don't know why you don't stick to the MTZ's , as plenty of people use them year-round with nary a complaint.

I also forgot to mention that the 13.5's will defiantly stick out past the fenders and may catch the attention of the pork. Worse so if you run spacers.

What I meant was that I don't drive deerfoot everyday, so I can't justify buying some studded Duratracs.

My MTZ's are almost bald, so i told myself when they were done, i would upgrade to 35's. I have the proper, axles, gearing, steering, etc now.

I think if I were to do MTZ's again, I would definitely get them siped. I heard that helps them a lot in the winter. I more or less want to try something new for tires.

I also forgot to mention that the 13.5's will defiantly stick out past the fenders
Ya, that was another concern. I have 6 inch flares, but these would stick past them. I would probably put some mud flaps on to reduce the amount of rocks that get picked up.

I know that every tire has it's pros and con's and the only flaw that people have with Toyo's are the weight and the width. If they made a 35x 12.5 I'd pick up those. I'm just wondering if the extra weight is worth it for the tires.

Also, it'd be nice not to have to pick up brand new tires and there happens to be someone selling some Toyo's in that size on the forum.

If you really want the toyos in a 12.5 wide, buy different wheels and get them in 12.5 wide. I run 35X12.5R17. If you sipe them, I'm sure that they'll work well in the winter too.

Then again, that is a spendy way to get the tire size you want.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

It seems like anyone you talk to about Toyo's, they either run them and love them. Or they don't run them and say that they are junk because they're too heavy.

Looks like I'll do a bit more research.

the weight of a toyo is for a reason and easily justifiable.
if you are gonna take most of the bypasses and air down to 15... well this clearly aint the tire for you.

they are amazing and they are heavy.  they are costly in fuel but they are durable and peaceful.

If you don't want brand new then you can have my Hankook Dyna Pro MT's................after I put my Toyo's on...........oh and not for free........a good deal for sure but not free :)

i ran the 37x14.50 Toyo on my jeep. i never got hassled by police. i did hate how much mud they threw all over the jeep when other jeeps with flares remained clean. They are heavy but after having the stock 31/10.50 MTR's on it which are also very heavy, the difference in weight per corner was not enough to cause wheel bearings and ball joints to prematurely wear that much sooner. i just knew that i would go through parts yearly.
Mine worked amazing off road and i felt safe on the rare occasion my jeep was on winter roads.
And they looked really cool too. lol.
