In cab winch control
« on: August 13, 2011, 06:34:09 PM »
I was just curious ;) if it is possible to wire in cab switches for my winch, I have a Warn M8000. I am just trying to get some projects going that are cheaper, and more DYS friendly, I think it would look cool as well having the winch control in my dash! :D

Thanks,

Marshall

Should only need a (ON/OFF/ON) toggle switch.  The way I did mine is with a three wire etc chord that I hacked (armor is nice) remove your cover off winch where your controller hooks in. You will then see there is only three wires going to plug. Follow them back to solenoid and you will note the following.
One wire has power (12 volt from battery)
Other two (go to small solenoid leads) to energize the solinoid
All you need to do is add eyelets at solinoids and rune the chord into cab and then wire the switch (do not splice into wires with som crappy scotch connectors or anything)
Power wire (12volts) goes to center of switch and the other two to the other two leads.

This is assuming you have the simple solinoid system and controller without the integrated diodes etc. Most are this way.

a lot cheaper than a remote system, I have never plugged a chorded controller onto my winch lol

gives you something to do in my garage eh Marshall ;)

Just get the 3 position switch, and head on over. I will be in Edmonton for the next couple weeks, but I am pretty sure my roommate is gonna be putting an in cab control in as well so we can have a winch button party out back!...
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

I would go with hard wiring it. I have not seen a wireless remote with the ability to finally bump the spool yet.
This what I did.

If you are going to have the switch in a location that can easy be hit, you're going to want to have a sepret on/ off switch to power the on/off/on momentary switch. this is because as you go down the trail if something bumps it you are going to spooling in or out.
draw power from a third sores in the cab. I ran a extra fuse block into the cab for accessories. this way you are not running a live wire all the way from the front to the cab and 3 more back. I used the on/off switch to power the momentary switch so very easy to set up.
And two tips place the switch in a easy to reach place when you are laying in a very awkward position and the one that took me some time to figer out because no one said it, with a warn winch (5pin)  you have to ground the switch to the motor.
Good luck and don't let the smoke out
Why does your Jeep say Toyota on it?
The obstacle is the path.

A valid point made. Be very careful when pulling the line all the way in with an in-cab switch that you don't get someones finger jammed in. I have one of those bigger rubber winch beans on the front and tuck it in the last two feet or so with no assistance. Also makes a great cable weight when winching. A seperate switch power is a good option.
