98 2.5l 5speed electrical problems
« on: September 20, 2011, 09:08:22 PM »
Well the jeep was in the shop for over 8 hours today and nothing was done, seems to Be worse than when i took it in. Was just the speedometer and hesitation while under acceleration now it's my alternator charging too.

Need some advice and input, or any suggestions.  Having some trouble with my 98 TJ 2.5l 5 speed.
Problem....many.... Speedometer jumps around from currant speed to 180 etc while at a steady speed, accelerating and even while stopped at a light....   sometimes accompanied by a loss of power while under acceleration (Cuts in and out while stepping on the gas seems like it's not getting gas)

volt meter Gage dead.... but was told by the mechanic (today) it was charging ( they tested it) but found out this evening that it is not charging ( as the jeep was just towed back to the shop tonight due To a dead battery, and alternator not charging.)

Unable to communicate with the computer while engine is running. But will communicate while key is off.

Computer is under 4 months old

Had some trouble when I installed the engine, so I installed a new computer and couldn't get the jeep to spark. ... The fuse that tells the jeep to spark didn't complete the circuit  so it is fused and jumped in the engine fuze block to make engine spark. But jeep worked fine up untill the other day. when the problems started.

Could this be faulty computer.... Or some other electrical gremlin.... The computer is under 5 months old...

Check all ground connections, particularly the strap that goes from the engine to the firewall.

I wasn't even a customer and you went out of your way to help me..'thank you very much for the great customer service...

Could all these symptoms be caused by a faulty alternator....?  Changed the alternator and haven't noticed any Of the symptoms I had before... ? Took the jeep for a 2 hour drive with nothing wrong...,
