cj8 engine swap
« on: April 14, 2012, 11:39:04 AM »
So at this point i think im giving up on the amc 304 that came in my jeep so i've decided its time for a swap. The 4bt is my engine of choice but at the moment its alittle out of my price range so im thinking about going with the ol' inline 6 for now. I still wouldnt mind diesel but from what i have been told most vw and toyota diesels which are cheap are underpowered for a lifted jeep on 35's. There is a inline with 180,000kms ive been looking at and am debating buying this week, or a hilux with low kms. Any input or advice would be great this is a first time swap for me.
Thanks James

whats wrong with the 304? could it be rebuilt? which inline 6 are you thinking of swapping in, 4.2L or 4.0L? a 4bt may look like a nice option but your old cj frame would not be happy with the extra weight.
give us some more details?

Well for one when I bought it I was told it was rebuilt yet appears otherwise. It  stalls burns all colors of smoke, idles weird and tend to act differently every time it is started. I would go with the 4.0l  due to its reliabitly and  it would be my third vehicle with one in it. I would then match it up with a 5 speed and sell my 727 auto. My friend suggested a vortec v8 but there a little more then the inline but more power. As for My frame I'm pretty sure it's aftermarket or was built so I was little iffy on the strength because it's all welded together.

The issues with the 304 make me think bad carb or intake leak.

A 4.0L would give you more power and better economy than the 304. Be more complicated due to the computer/wiring.  Finding a mid 90s XJ wrecked for cheap would be a good donor.

Someone here recently put a 5.2 Magnum motor into a TJ and said it was really easy. I'm not overly fond of the Magnum motors though. Not a lot of HP for the MPG and not a lot of aftermarket support.

Varsity Chrysler was recently blowing out rebuilt 4.0Ls and 5.2/5.9s for $750. Grab the wiring harness from a wrecked XJ and you'd be good to go. Ok you'd probably need a tranny as well.

It was actually converted to fuel injection mabe there was a issue doing the swap.
I actually just messages two people about two xj's I'm just waiting on replies. I'm hoping to get a 5 speed with it because im not a fan of the 727. Im not familiar with the vortecs so I'm thinking I will wait on these xjs and call up varsity to see if these engines still exist.
Would I need to get a new transfer or could I keep my d300 twin stick?
Thanks for the pointers

Sorry my bad. It was Renfrew not Varsity that was blowing out the rebuilt motors.

If you get a used XJ for donors don't use a 5spd from a 1990 or newer, they had the crappy Peugot 5psds. Later years got the AX15. Try to find one with an external clutch slave cylinder.

The stroker from Jay sounds like it could be cool.

Donor vehicle has been bought, Scrambler will be equipped with a inline 6 hopefully before maylong! Engine has 179000kms and I was told a new clutch and other then that it's pretty mint. I'll be parting the rest if it out if anyone is interested, it's a 95.
