97 XJ 4.0L stick.

It's been rough starting and been getting worse until it finally stalled out and I got a few codes... or should I say I have a few codes that aren't being thrown? take your pick. Talked with someone and they suggested it could be the O ring on my fuel pump causing the rough starts. Was gonna check that after I drove around a little to lighten the tank but now I'm going to have to suck the gas out.

Here's the codes:
14 - MAP sensor voltage too high or low.
15 - Speed sensor or circut. (I know I need a new connection for the new Mega-Short I just got installed)
21 - O2 sensor or wiring faulty - 4 or 5 times
55 - End of Code.

I think that's all of them unless one snuck in between all the O2 codes that were flashing. I have disconnected the battery and still get them so I can't prolong it anymore. O2's have been going for a while now. Meh. Shouldn't cause the stalling. MAP - would this be the cause? Just replaced the starter with a rebuilt one. Last tune up was 6 months ago. It's my DD so it isn't stale gas. Oh and the hose for my Evap kinda snapped into 3 pieces so I did the best I could with some electrical tape until I could fix it properly. (anyone have a spare they wanna sell? lol)

Thoughts?
I'll be working on it Sunday if the weather is decent enough.

So now it's not restarting at all?  or starts and stalls right away?

When you say rough starts... you mean it's tough to get started... or it runs rough at first after you do get started?

Could be your battery ........or your track bar!

I'm gonna go with it's my MAP. Going to replace it tomorrow. Haven't had a chance all week.

Battery is fine. It's a brand new yellow top. ... ummm my track bar? lol having a few beers today?

Rough start: spins but doesn't do anything for a bit until it starts to catch and then fires up but a little boggy for a couple minutes. (I'm going to say this would be due to my fuel pump, seal, or the screener in the tank. Just have to get it done)
Replacing O2 sensors and pigtails this weekend. Only place I found that has new pigtails is the dealership and I hope they are the right thing. They seem to be the only place that sells the hose for the evap as well. They said it has to be ordered from the states and it takes a week or two to get here.  Anyone know of anywhere else that might sell it? I've tried AutoValue, Partsource, and Napa.

If none of these fix it, then I'll be stumped.

Figured it out. It was nothing listed. Pulled the fuel pump today and a hose was disconnected from the pump to the module. Case closed. Thanks to all for your input

I'm a bit surprised that would cause the 02 sensor codes... ah well.  Glad to hear you got it fixed.

The o2's been running codes for a while now. The XJ kept running, so I didn't bother fixing them. It only affected fuel economy but with mods like we have, you don't really notice it. Just waiting for new pigtails to come in from Red Deer. Dealer part only. So I'll be replacing up and down sensors with tails to go with them when they arrive and hopefully that will clear the codes for the 02.

I haven't got the fuel tank put back on to make sure that was what the problem was but I am 90 percent sure that was the cause. When removing the module, the fuel level sensor decided it was done and snapped. Using super glue to try and fix it and I'll try to put it all back together tomorrow or I'm in bigger trouble as it's a near impossible part to get unless I buy a new one and it's about 600 bucks for the module.

(for those wondering how to tell if you have issues with your filter, screen, pump - prime the fuel rail. It looks like a valve cover on your tires. Remove it and press the little nob in. If gas comes spraying out, you can test for pressure. If it doesn't, you gotta drop your tank and pull the module. It's a lot easier then it sounds)

I got a fuel tank out of a 97+ XJ for free if you want.

My tank's in good condition. I might need a new module though. My fuel level indicator broke. (the tiny plastic piece that keeps it attached to the module) I tried using super glue but I don't know how well the epoxy in the super glue will hold up being inside the tank with the gasoline. I guess I'll find out quick if suddenly I run out of gas.

Does your tank include the module?

My tank includes everything. I basically just snipped the fuel lines after I unbolted it and had it out from under the jeep. Now it needs a new home. Yours for free :)

Awesome! I'll take it! I can't pick it up though. Slight problem driving with my fuel tank sitting in the garage. haha

Send me a PM. Thanks a lot Dingleberry. :)
