Fuel Pump issue... maybe
« on: May 19, 2012, 02:22:17 PM »
I have a 96 cherokee 4.0L and lately I've been experiencing some hesitation/stalling putting the vehicle under load, and it seems that it happens when the jeep is hot, and then once it starts it'll even dip the idle to almost a stall sitting at a light.  If the jeep is fresh and cool, it seems to be fine.  So, I decided that it might be symptoms of a fuel pump issue.  I went out and bought a new filter, and a new pump.

Replaced the filter, and replaced the pump.  Now I can hear the relay working, and the pump whirring turning the ignition to the on position, but no fuel is being delivered from the tank.  I unhooked the hose to the fuel filter so that I would just have a hose coming from the tank to see if it would squirt out fuel, and nothing.  Thought maybe we reversed the wires, so we tried that, and it makes noise, but does not seem to pump any fuel into the line.

Any thoughts?  I've heard it could be the pressure regulator, but everything was working fine before...

There is a check valve somewhere on that pump (I haven't had issues with mine so I can't say I've seen what it looks like). Make sure your hoses are connected properly.  Did you reverse the lines??  I think Cherokees have a return style system.  I am assuming you primed the system before trying to start. Fuel pressure reg is not going to be in the equation if you can't get fuel to the filter. Sorry this is all I can think of  :'(

Problem solved.  We did everything right, but the problem was that the brand new fuel pump was faulty.   I bought another new one, but didn't want to try it until we did all the troubleshooting.  So what we did was put the old one back on to see if it would squirt fuel, and it did.  So clearly there's nothing else wrong with the system.  Installed the new new pump and it worked great.  I'll be returning the other one tomorrow with a bunch of wasted time behind me.   :)

Thanks for your thoughts.
