Rear diff binding
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:39:26 AM »
I have a 2002 Grand cherokee overland with quadra drive and a dana44 rear end that had a clunk in the rear when going over bumps. I didn't think it was anything serious but my brother did and said we have to fix it right away. We pulled out the axles, put on new bearings and seals, and put it back together. Still clunked. Turned out it was the upper ball joint. So the clunk was fixed after changing the ball joint but now when I take a sharp turn I hear something rubbing and it even seems as bad as binding. I took it into the gear center and they said I need to replace my transfer case. I find this unlikely since it only happened right after we messed with it.

Ultimately I am looking to sell this vehicle but nobody would want to buy it with this problem. I also don't want to sell something to someone and have them have to spend thousands of dollars to fix it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with it? If it works fine I would likely be selling it for $5-6000 so I don't want to spend $3000 to have the t-case replaced. It has 255000km on it but runs amazing. The vehicle is in great shape otherwise.

Thats pretty common on Grand Cherokees with the AWD t-case. The rest of us just live with it. You may not have noticed it before because there wasslop in the suspension.

BTW how does a clunk in the rear end translate to a bad ball joint in the front end?

i would guess its the ball joint on the upper wishbone rear suspension.

Part 21.

Did you have the front out, and do you have an adjustable track bar?
