Passing Vehicle Inspection with mods
« on: February 03, 2013, 08:50:54 AM »
Hey all,

I have been throwing around the idea of taking my 89 YJ with SOA and 2" springs and swapping to coils or coil overs......question is.....when it goes in for a safety will this be an issue because the suspension has been heavily modified? It currently has been asked to get an inspection on it anyways.....And it will be needing more down the future it seems due to its age.
Also, I'm in the midst of researching and gathering parts to swap a 5.3L chevy in, which I cant see being an issue as it will have more emissions crap then my 4.2L does anyways.....so it should not be an issue correct??

Any info would be great.
Thanks

Inspections are a political game and thus are subject to the opinion of the inspector. They are usually heavily abused into shops finding things they can charge you for under the blackmail of your vehicle being unsafe. Granted there IS some merit into inspections but for the most part they are treated as cash grabs. Go to your local 4x4 shop and have them do the inspection, you'll have a much better time.

It depends on the inspection. Out of province can be tight. Insurance inspection is basic, good brakes, tight front end, nothing un-safe. The only catch I've noticed is the question about it being modified for speed or performance... I like to think jeeps are modified for going slower.
Get it inspected sooner while its less modified, preferably by a 4x4 shop that understands. :)
