Wiring tail lights question
« on: May 27, 2013, 10:37:11 AM »
I know we all love wiring...  and want to know if there are any other thoughts on the issue I'm having...

So I'm wiring up the tail lights on the MJ.  The engine harness is from a 95 XJ which is a 5 wire going to the MJ's 4 wire system.  I got a trailer harness to go from 5 to 4 wire.   That way the turn signals and brake lights will be figured out by the module in the harness.   White is ground.  Brown is park lights.  Yellow and green do brake/signal.  And I'm splicing all this into the harness.

i know the lights work cause if I hook them up directly, things light up.   But I need the module to help when brakes and signal are being used.

I hooked things up and I get park lights, but nothing for brake/TS.   I have power up to the harness, but nothing coming out of the green/yellow wires.

I'm thinking a bad trailer module but it was a brand new one....

Any thoughts....  besides that wiring sucks  >:(

I should have mentioned that Rev is not in the equation.  That is a separate wire going to it's own lights

They are on the same circuit.  park lights use the low intensity filament.  Brake/TS us the other.

And no diagram... of course not...  people only plug and play this shiet lol... It's a just a little black box.

There are 2 bulbs on each side for brakes and TS.  My plan B is to wire the top bulb to the brake and second bulb to the TS directly on the brighter filament which would work for the truck, but would not solve the issue if I ever want to hook up a trailer.

I'm in the upper SW...  just off Hwy 8 behind Westhills...

So I tried a new module, different manufacturer.  Same results.  Park lights work but nothing through the turn signals or brake.

I have attached a wiring diagram I found online....

Have you tried metering between the pins?

Every time I've had issues with those 5 to 4, it's been the ground wire for me!  I think I have a good ground but somehow I don't. Try running for a quick test a jumper from the battery down to it.
