tranny swap for 1990 xj

i have a 1990 jeep xj and a 96 xj will the tranny work from the 96 to the 90 ...the 90 has no part time and 96 has the part time ...but will it still work without swapping transfer case  and they both 4spd auto ...and was the 90 a 4.0 ho or just a 4.0? ask anything and i'll answer best i can
