Utility Trailer Questions
« on: August 05, 2013, 09:03:33 AM »
A while back the wifey and I decided to move just outside of town to Langdon, and now we are starting to tackle landscaping our relatively large yard.  As such, I'm quickly approaching the point where I think a utility trailer might be a reasonable accessory for the XJ.  Mainly the thing will be used for hauling gravel/dirt/rock, wood, etc.

XJ has a factory class 3 hitch, AW4 tranny (with aux cooler), and heavy duty springs/leafs (OME) so it should be fine for the pulling part.

Anyway, while scoring a M101 would be sweet.........it's also virtually impossible to find (and possibly too small?), so I've started looking at some of the Home Depot/Crappy Tire stuff.  Some seem okay, being able to haul ~1500lb of payload.

Not looking to spend a huge amount of cash.

So anyone have any experience with anything along these lines?  Anything I should know, or desperately avoid?

Thanks.

Find something that is 4x8 or larger, inside of the box.  As well look for the larger tire. The bolt pattern for most of the trailer axles are 5x4.5 same as the jeeps.
My 3.5x6 trailer is too small for what I use it for, it's a nice trailer but if I'm gonna buy another one I'd be looking at 4x8 or 5x10, it will fit lumber/drywall/plywood and not be a big issue. I'm always using mine for dump runs and such so outside tie downs are great.

Whats your budget? 1500# isn't much when you start hauling dirt/rock. I'd be more inclined to find something used that has atleast a 14" wheel and 3500# axle.  15" would be better. I had an old tent trailer that had been gutted and made a pretty good utility trailer.

Stay away from truck box trailers. They are freakin heavy! Solid sides are nice as well for when you want to haul loose material(dirt/rock).
