Transfer case drop studs?
« on: July 25, 2013, 09:20:45 PM »
Just finished installing the lift on my 2000 XJ, any ideas how to get the studs out of the frame on the t case mounting when installing the t case drop? We tried heating them and we also tried welding bolts on to them but they are so tight (or siezed) that the bolts just broke off. I can't be the first to face this, seems it must have come up here before. Thanks in advance.

is there anything left of the stud since you broke them off? You may be better off just drilling out the old stud, then drilling it once size larger and installing a bolt / nut you can remove down the road... or tap it out again one size larger with a new bolt... I seem to remember taking those out was a PITA on my 2001 as well, however we just double nutted the studs and they came out after a little persuasion..
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

I was able to heat them up and use vise grips to spin the studs out. As TL asked is there any stud still showing or did it break off flush with the rail?

Thanks for the replies, they are not flush to the rail, there is a tad bit visible (were I was welding the nuts). In the next few days I will drill them out and do a re-tap. Thanks again.
